Watergate also helped solidify the media as a moral authority, which was desirable since they spent 2 decades training and injecting intelligence agents into the media as propagandists a la Operation Mockingbird. That's why Watergate has been so sacred to the MSM.

Unfortunately, Nixon also comitted the unforgivable sin of decoupling the U.S. dollar from gold. You could argue that it helped mitigate civilian damage from inflation, since inflation has overall been extreme compared to the "devastating" inflation during Carter's term, yet people barely complained about it until COVID kicked it into maximum overdrive. Still a very sad and large blot on his record.

And then suddenly every individual item is rounded up to the nearest dollar instead of .99 to make up for the losses, creating another $50 million in profits.
Then again $3 million in losses over an entire "convenience store chain" that is still pulling billions in revenue shouldn't hurt almost at all. Big number in a vacuum, pocket change on the grand scale.
