CONCORD, N.H. —
State representatives will debate next year whether to tear down the Hannah Duston memorial in Boscawen.

The statue has been at the center of a heated debate for years.

Rep. David Nagel, R-Gilmanton, is filing legislation to remove the statue, which he said is offensive to Native Americans.

"There were probably some unfortunate circumstances that she faced. However, they were more global and affected Natives way more than they did European settlers," Nagel said.

Duston was a colonial Massachusetts woman captured along with her baby by the Abenaki people in 1697. As the story goes, her infant was killed, and Duston later killed and scalped 10 Abenaki before escaping.

"She was lost to history for almost 200 years, and in the mid-1800s, there is this concept that we're migrating westward and the Natives are a problem," Nagel said. "And that was what that memorial was designed to inspire, was the genocide and unnecessary murder of Native Americans."

State Sen. Tim McGough, R-Merrimack, brought out his 1970s-era state liquor store Hannah Duston commemorative bottle on Columbus Day.

He said he views the statue as a symbol of survival, not racism.

"Any loss of life in war or other conflict is always a tragedy, and I think what we memorialize for Hannah Duston was her strength and willingness to defend her family," McGough said.

Nagel, who is also a doctor and served in the Indian Health Service, said Indigenous people have a different perspective.

"For my Native friends, it's a big symbol of that hatred that goes back to the mid-1800s," he said.

That's awesome. The Abenaki must have been a bunch of disorganized retards. We should have shot all of them.

I've been to pioneer cemeteries and seen graves of children and babies marked that they were killed by Indians on X date. Also their adult family members, of course. Entire families scalped and murdered, and the babies swung against trees to smash their skulls.

The statue should stay.

I care about injun opinion about as much as I care about the opinions of losers of any other war.

I also learned of the disparities that exist in how we treat those who suffer; people discriminated against not just because of their pain and their inability, but also because of their skin color, their sex, their sexual orientation. I was determined to change the way pain and addiction are perceived, judged, and treated.
I am very proud that in all my advocacy and legislative work I have been able to function in a bi-partisan, sometimes non-partisan manner.
I will work to promote diversity in the Republican party and beyond.
I will work for state and federal recognition of local Native tribes.
RINO seeks to dismantle and dishonor white society, most likely at the behest of foreign interests and their deep pockets. Many such cases.

How much do you have to hate white people to be this cynical? I thought only muslims, jews, and presbyterians could pull that off. "Probably"? Look the dead woman from 200 years ago in the eye nigga. This goofy goy is demon possessed.

Think about how a hundred years ago it was just effortless to put these statues up. You faced no resistance and everyone was in agreement that these were heroes. It was so easy to do things back then. They built the Golden Gate bridge in like three years. You can't build anything anymore. You can make a statue of a fat black woman but that's it.

As always, I find myself wondering if the natives are anywhere near as bothered about this as the complainant is.
I didn't even know about this statue or the woman it's dedicated to until I saw the article. And in about five, maybe eight minutes tops, I'll of forgotten about it and continue going about my day.

I wonder what other tribes thought of them. It's very possible Hannah was a hero to some of them too. The Fallacy of the Monolithic Injun pervades this discourse.
There was one thing everyone who ever associated with the Sioux could agree on, and that was that the Sioux were colossal assholes who needed a constant supply of ass-beatings to be kept in line and kept from causing problems for everyone else.

As to the Abenaki specifically, they were largely allied with the French and indulged in no end of raiding, so that should tell you all you need to know about how well they were liked.
