RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - As a result of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, there are changes coming to people who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits.

“Lots of changes coming to federal benefit programs, including SNAP,” said Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada CEO Marie Baxter. “Largely having to do with who was exempt from needing to meet work requirements.”

According to recent data 505,500 Nevadans use SNAP benefits, which is about 15% of the state’s population.

While seniors are still SNAP eligible, many will not be if they don’t meet work requirements. The bill requires able bodied adults to work or volunteers 80 hours per month and document that every 6 months to continue receiving benefits.

There will also no longer be exceptions that allow for veterans, people who are homeless, or young adults who have aged out of foster care.

Baxter says her biggest worry is that people don’t know about these changes, and even though they are eligible for the benefits, they might not take the necessary steps to make sure they receive them.

“November 1st the notification period for people on SNAP. December 1st is when these different rules really go into effect,” Baxter said.

Baxter says her second biggest concern is that this will result in a lot more people coming into the food pantry, making the supply more challenging.

I get where people are coming from when they want social assistance reform and Canada has similar issues with welfare. The biggest issue I see with it is that a lot of the people on these programs are not people you want working in any business. I have family who owns a small store and have applied for government grants that get these sort of people into the workforce, I suppose long enough to draw EI. Every single time you end up with someone who needs a second employee to watch them because they are lazy or untrustworthy or combative or mentally ill or a combination. They negatively impact the business. They've come to work drunk or high or so unkempt they had to be sent home because they stank up the space. One time they had a grant for an autistic person who literally laughed in the face of a customer and walked away when asked a simple question.

It's the same issues with homelessness. Everyone wants change but nobody wants to address the elephant in the room that the chronically homeless cannot just be thrown into housing because most of them are severely mentally ill and would destroy wherever you place them.

If you're not part of the majority who are getting by at best, then I think you should probably be taxed harder for crying about the pennies you're forced to contribute to alleviate hunger since you're obviously not the type to contribute to charitable foundations
