After about a decade of "identity politics", I'm not only tired of the terms "racism" and "racist", I think I may be getting tired of the term "race" (as in people) as well.

Also, when I think "race" as in a people, I may naturally think of actual different fantasy races such as mermaids or elves or birdfolk. Not merely different skin colors and slightly different facial features of a single species. Different "races" of this world are more like different breed of one race or species. I thought kiddo was a "totally not hip but older people think it's hip" thing. Like a word an uncle would use.

I have a kid who's basically my nephew (I'm friends with his mom and he loves spending time with me) and I call him "kiddo" in this way. I can see people using kiddo as a smug condescending nickname, like someone calling you "honey" or "sweet summer child" in an argument (I fucking hate those,) but if the relationship is appropriate and you're using it sincerely/sweetly, I think "kiddo" is perfectly fine. I call him his name, Kiddo, Little Man, Dude, Mr. Man, stuff like that.
It's weird when adults call one another kiddo and they're on the same "respect level," like not an adult and their superior (dad, uncle, etc) but two adults closer in level. I bet this is how Japanese people feel when you use the wrong suffix.
