thats a possibility, too. the question is WHO he would be hiding from. perhaps the feds founds something that implicates some kind of terror cell or something that will put him in danger when he testifies. if somebody can chime in on this as i don't know for sure, but is this standard procedure in high profile cases like this in the U.S?

And even in World War Two there were times an enemy would be shot with an M1 Garand or BAR or M1919 with FMJ ball ammo and something weird would happen after the round entered an enemy's body, like it hitting a thick bone or something, and there would be no exit wound. It wasn't common, but it is not unheard of. Tyler using a hunting round with a soft point or hollow point increases the chances of there not being an exit wound because those rounds are designed to expand/mushroom rapidly and dump all their energy to create massive internal damage. Especially if the bullet hit bone, like Charlie's clavicle and spine or something.

My money is on the bullet hitting one of his cervical vertebrae. There was a post early in this thread with a nice illustration that pointed out that Charlie went into the fencing response before the blood began pouring out of his neck. The fencing response is indicative of brain damage, caused by physical shock to the brain stem. If the hydrostatic shock from bullet smashing through his carotid artery and other soft tissue in his neck wasn't enough to do it, the physical shock conducted up the spine from the round even glancing off one of his neck vertebrae likely would have been enough to wreck his brain stem and trigger the fencing response.

That, or something even weirder would not surprise me. There was an episode of Mythbusters where they tried to test the myth of swimming safely away from someone trying to shoot at you while you were underwater. The rounds that got the most penetration in their ballistic gel block (or any penetration at all) were the slowest ones. If I remember right, they tried to shoot a rifle using 30-06 or similar round, and the bullets just shattered as soon as they hit the water, leaving only fragments to hit the block of ballistic gel, if they reached the ballistic gel at all. Ballistics can get very weird when a bullet is suddenly forced to decelerate form supersonic velocity by a sudden change of density from that of air, to water, or flesh.

But ultimately, we'll have to see what the coroner's report says.
