I'll read it, but couldn't we argue that the industrial revolution destroyed those foundations? For the first time ever it turned people from the community into the faceless commodity. From a philosophical viewpoint, Marx and Engles both do make some really good points. Particularly the effect that capitalism has on the individual. I think the big problem is their prescription to fix the ills that capitalism brings, is where everything goes off the rails and where communism just falls apart as an ideology.

The industrial revolution basically gave us feminism because it slowly supplanted and replaced all together the need for just about any form of home economics. Prior to industrialization households were economically productive within themselves and Home economics had a very different meaning to what it is today.

As an example, the growth of automated loom and fabric factories would displace the economy of spinsters, which functioned as a sort of social safety net for women. If a woman was unmarried or her spouse passed she could always reliably earn a little money by spinning thread and fabric. Industrialization changed that, and very rapidly these displaced economic 'refugees' with no job prospects would turn to crime and prostitution (The latter of which would explode through the Victorian period) as they simply could not compete with the productive efficiency of privately owned industrial capital.

This combined with the advent of labor-saving devices conceived of to liberate women from the duties of maintaining the household left women with lots of free time and little to fill it with. If not for WW2 'women in the workplace' would have most likely been an inevitability anyway.
