Correct me if I'm misremembering, been a wild week, but it was absolutely luck that they caught him. The FBI was releasing photos and trying to get a palm print off the rifle but outside of that they basically had nothing. The reason he was caught was because he confessed that he did it to his parents and his dad called the FBI and held him until they could pick him up. His dad also surrendered his sons electronics which is how they found all the other potential collaborators on discord and Reddit.

Like he was able to drive 3 hours away, spent several more hours shit posting that he did it in a discord group. At the same time the FBI was posting on Xitter and saying they interviewed the gunman but released him on accident.

I don't want to shit on the FBI too hard but they had their asses saved, not by Patel, but by virtue of the shooter being a genuine retard and his father who reported and detained him.

Luck would be he broke his leg jumping off the building, or a cop stopped him for something completely innocuous and found something that happened to tie him to the case.

He shot Kirk and was off the building and the campus in probably less than two minutes. People act like the FBI should of been there before he got away. This wasn't a secure area, they weren't checking IDs.

He'd have to have a record for any prints to be useful. DNA takes weeks, even highest priority from the FBI will probably take days at least and again has to be on record to be out any use. The rifle is probably the best lead, assuming it has serials on record and it was never privately sold.

They searched through video footage, not just on campus but the surrounding area. There was probably a lot more effort than can be seen of going over the footage, not just from the campus but the surrounding neighborhoods, to make sure they were publishing the suspect before asking for the public's help, and it was good enough that at least three people in his life recognized him and turned him in. They didn't have nothing and the father did all the work for him.

I honestly don't understand what more people expecting the FBI to do. It's really fucking hard to identify someone to a crime they have no personal connection to.
