I was just trying to explain this to a friend who leans more left (I'm working on it, more of a classical liberal, so not a lost cause). There seems to be a gap in civility between the Right and Left. I have no delusions that there are those on the Right who would celebrate the death of a prominent Left-wing figure, like Hasan : optimistic :, but the extent and degree on the Left seems more exaggerated. The jokes from the Left seem to have a contemptuousness behind them, as you rightly pointed out. Conversely, on the Right, there's a sentiment to be more tempered, much to the chagrin of the more radicalized members. It's a really weird dichotomy to witness, especially in the face of the media that seems about fourty years behind and loves to paint the Right wing as violent and the Left wing as pacifist hippies.

I could have phrased it better. I meant more that since he was a fundamentalist about the debate, people will take his quotes out of context, because that also a debate practice (whether anybody likes it or not).

Shattering and expanding worldviews should be college is for. None of these kids that debated Charlie were harmed in any meaningful way. The vast majority of them left the mic better than they were before, with seeds planted that could change their lives for the better. These kids need a rude awakening that their worldview might not just be the correct one. Better have your paradigms and axioms challenged early than to go through your life believing in or operating on the wrong information.

I think some of the left is salvageable. A notable number of people have been disgusted with what they've directly seen from many of the more radical vocal responses. Those who are firmly stuck on the Democrat/leftist plantation might just never leave though, but you never know. I think some sort of reformation or schism for the Left is imminent. Additionally more people are facing the consequences of their actions which might serve as a wake up call for them or those around them.

This is an honest question, just for in general: what comes after this?

More debate? People could, but considering Charlie Kirk himself got shot during a debate, we aren't really going to be "getting another Charlie Kirk".

Almost feels like there's been a "call" to debate the nation back into an alignment where debate can happen again. Based on the gravedancing, there's enough people who reject that for it to not work.

Idk if I buy that at all. They probably thought their kid was finally growing up and getting an apartment with his friend which is actually really typical and normal. His parents were very fucking clearly unaware of what was happening with their kid as evidenced by the moms facebook profile which was completely public and filled with personal information. I think they had absolutely no idea and no reason to be cynical or suspicious.
