When it comes to degrees like liberal arts, they're deemed "useless" because it doesn't really translate into a skill that employers (outside of academia) are looking for and the fact that it's also much easier to obtain than science degrees means that the "well you went to college, you're smart and can learn" mantra which used to carry college graduates for years is lessened just on difficulty level alone.
