It's not so much tempted as it is that companies used to require insane work hours from drivers. The deal with hours of service regulations is that it cuts away some of the flexibility drivers used to have, but it keeps companies from demanding extremely unsafe hours. Even with electronic logging devices, there are tricks to fudge or circumvent HOS regs and a company that's willing to hire dubious drivers probably doesn't want to look at their logs.
I'm not so sure about whatever the tech-bro's are backing at any given moment but there is a future to be won in space. If the United States used its resources to out compete all other nations, that would probably see the whole thing as a farce (until it starts providing a return on investment), it could potentially extend American hegemony and influence for a good amount of time, especially if we can figure out how to properly harness the resources and minerals on other planets. There is no one on the Moon or Mars but at the same time both of these places hold immense untapped potential.
