Gonna be autistic here. There is no such thing as an "illegal immigrant." An "alien" is any person from a foreign country. An "immigrant" is an "alien" who is in the USA on a residency visa. If a foreigner here has no residency visa, he's a "nonresident aliens." And, lacking any visa at all makes him an "illegal alien."

Not in the modern sense, no. Immigration(LoC link) in the late 1800's was also mostly European or Chinese and the people arrived through ports and were documented upon arrival. After being documented they would have been considered citizens or "free peoples". Today illegal and undocumented migration is magnitudes greater that traditional legal migration. People entering this way wouldn't have been considered "free peoples" in the 1800's. They would be criminal aliens.
You're not being autistic, I just hadn't had my coffee yet. This is the correct way to interpret illegal immigration according to the letter of the law and constitution. Anyone entering the US not through a authorized port of entry and without a visa or documentation would not have been eligible to be counted in the census as they were not a citizen or a "free persons" as the Constitution definies it. The Constitution used "free persons" like a person uses "urban youths" today. The founding fathers had to tip tow around giving specific races preferences despite their own preferences.
