Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy will announce expedited plans this week to build a nuclear reactor on the moon, the first major action by the former Fox News host as the interim NASA administrator.

NASA has discussed building a reactor on the lunar surface, but this would set a more definitive timeline — according to documents obtained by POLITICO — and come just as the agency faces a massive budget cut. The move also underscores how Duffy, who faced pushback from lawmakers about handling two jobs, wants to play a role in NASA policymaking.

“It is about winning the second space race,” said a NASA senior official, granted anonymity to discuss the documents ahead of their wider release.

President Donald Trump named Duffy as interim administrator in July after abruptly withdrawing the nomination of billionaire Jared Isaacman amid a spat with the nominee’s ally, Elon Musk.
Duffy also offered a directive to more quickly replace the International Space Station, another NASA goal. The two moves could help accelerate U.S. efforts to reach the moon and Mars — a goal that China is also pursuing.

The plans align with the Trump administration’s focus on crewed spaceflight. The White House has proposed a budget that would increase human spaceflight funds for 2026, even as it advocates for major slashes to other programs — including a nearly 50 percent cut for science missions.
The reactor directive orders the agency to solicit industry proposals for a 100 kilowatt nuclear reactor to launch by 2030, a key consideration for astronauts’ return to the lunar surface. NASA previously funded research into a 40 kilowatt reactor for use on the moon, with plans to have a reactor ready for launch by the early 2030s.

The first country to have a reactor could “declare a keep-out zone which would significantly inhibit the United States,” the directive states, a sign of the agency’s concern about a joint project China and Russia have launched.
The directive also orders NASA to designate a leader for the effort and to get industry input within 60 days. The agency is seeking companies able to launch a reactor by 2030 since that’s around the time China intends to land its first astronaut on the moon.

The nuclear initiative means that NASA will continue to have a hand in nuclear development even after the Pentagon’s recent cancellation of a joint program on nuclear-powered rocket engines.

“While the budget did not prioritize nuclear propulsion, that wasn’t because nuclear propulsion is seen as a non-worthy technology,” the NASA official said.

The space station directive aims to replace the aging, leaky International Space Station with commercially run ones by changing how the agency awards contracts.
NASA plans to award at least two companies a contract within six months of the agency’s request for proposals. Officials hope to put a new station in space by 2030. Otherwise, only China would have a permanently crewed space station in orbit.

Several companies have risen to meet the space station demand, including Axiom Space, Vast, and Blue Origin. But lawmakers have expressed concern in recent months that the agency is not moving fast enough to give them the funds they need.

1. The moon has negligible atmosphere, so it is far easier to launch objects at high velocity from it.
This is the most comically asinine thing I've read today. I hope it was meant as satire.

Among other things:
  1. Space doesn't like humans or human-made objects. At all.
  2. The moon is coated in tiny shards of glass-like rock (regolit) that gets everywhere and erodes things at an incredible pace.
  3. The lack of atmosphere is good for some stuff, but now you have more space hate (eg - radiation, micrometeoroids, no air) to deal with (see point 1).
  4. Less grab-ity means humans will degrade quicker, even with a rigorous fitness regimen in place (admittedly, yiu just said launch rockets from the moon, not live there, but still).

So, if it's so easy to do stuff on the moon, why aren't we already doing it?

Pretty much sums up why I don't think most of what you pointed out renders it infeasible. I see no reason any of this requires people present to operate, though perhaps they would be useful temporarily for setting it up. Also, not specifically rockets - rockets require fuel that likely can't be obtained locally on the moon, whereas launchers may require only energy as input. At most rockets would be used as a "final extra push" for getting the projectile to escape the moon's gravity, and for guidance in-flight.


I hadn't heard about the regolit. Is it particularly worse than sand? I can't imagine it flies around very much given that there's no air to blow it around. Regardless, some sort of shelter from those micrometeoroids you mention would likely be necessary for the equipment when it's not firing. If there's no way to build one on the surface using moon-native materials, it might be better to dig down like @Stoneheart said - excavated matter will be necessary for filling the projectiles with at some point anyway. And the lower gravity on the moon should make it easier for caves and tunnels at a given depth to not cave in under the lower pressure, though differences in materials used may undo that advantage.

Now listen here buddy, nobody said anything about "easy". It is "easier" to construct an ultra-high-energy kinetic payload when every kilogram of matter you invest into it yields vastly more kinetic energy than for one used in aerial or even orbital kinetic bombardment. Getting anything to the moon is hard. But if it were to be found that it is feasible to put an entire nuclear reactor on the moon and keep it functioning, I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible to add a railgun or similar launcher.

Depends on the rocket but liquid oxygen and hydrogen is a common combination and is the source of the idea of a fuel station built on the moon that can hypothetically generate oxygen and hydrogen from ice and more economically provide fuel supply to stations at high value orbits for further expansion such as the L2 point (point always behind the moon relative to Earth) which has been proposed as the location for a space station for refueling vessels going beyond the Earth-Moon system.

The answer to that is very much yes, moon regolith is very fine and very sharp compared to sand on account that nothing is up there to cause any sort of erosion and it's electrostatically charged so it will stick to anything, it's just up there waiting and salivating at the chance to degrade and clog moving part and spacesuits.

There's a reason pretty much only the US was able to make lunar craft last any reasonable amount of time for 50 years. NASA understood its properties and figured out wheels that work and ways to keep things clean enough. Everyone else's rovers and whatever else would just clog up and fail. Helped a lot with designing the Mars rovers and part of the reason they were able to operate for years when the planned lifespan was months for the first couple. That and figuring out if you parked in the path of a dust devil it would clean off the solar panels.

You can put it through a tumbler if you want something sand-like that's not so sharp. Sintered regolith has been researched by NASA before though, same with melted regolith. Ah, I see. Well it's a great building material but to keep it off of things they already established that you just need to mess with the electric charge of a surface. Lunar regolith tends to build up electric charges, like balloons and this cat. If you either build some thin structures that attract positive and negative charged materials then your regolith clinging issue is gone. All of the stuff that's blown up by the interactions with the sun is now a non-issue.
