King of the hill appreciation thread - Yup.

How fucking insufferable was Peggy with her wanting a beer named after her? That was peak flanderization.
Well, Peggy is self-centered with the Dunning Kruger effect. If you recall from previous seasons, Peggy was known to have an inflated opinion with herself. It fits that she is still the same old Peggy Hill.

It looks like characters now are prone to coarse, although censored, language. Peggy dropping an F-bomb at the beer episode was a highlight, because that IS Peggy.

I binged the whole season since I was off today and didn't have to get up for work. It's... what we expected it to be. It is lower mid-tier at best. It is just another soulless revival series. It isn't as bad as people theorized it could end up being, but at the end of the day I feel it is a series that is just "there" so to speak. It doesn't have exist because it doesn't really add anything substantial to the show.

To get the one issue everyone was fearing out of the way: political topics. The show does go a little bit overboard, especially with the first episode, with cultural war terms. But a lot of them are just cringe references. There isn't really any major broad lecturing or anything like that. It doesn't go woke or go into anti-woke grifting territory. I'll give it respect in that regard for knowing to avoid a lot of this stuff. The one real overtly-political episode is the one where Hank takes GH to a sort of manosphere grifting course.

The episode isn't necessarily bad, but it doesn't do a good job of really exposing these con-artists for who they are and getting into the root issues behind a lot of young men feeling out of place in society. You can kind of tell this was the one topic that they felt they could safely go after because it wouldn't upset progressives. The episode ends with Hank buying GH a beat up car that he is going to help teach him to fix like he did with the one episode in the original series with Bobby. It is so on its nose and playing it safe by thinking that is all GH needs to iron out his personality. It is just a dumb ending to an ineffective episode.

The animation in the series is terrible. The voice acting is worse, and that goes for everyone involved. I am not so much commenting on how everyones voice have changed in the last sixteen years, but more so that the performances just aren't good. The voices also from a technical perspective seem very off.

The show does a lot of humor bitching about the modern day world. Stuff like technology and that area. The first episode has Hank losing his mind over new traffic designs and not being able to make a left turn into the alley. The big theme of the first episode and the entire season is that even if things will change, the people will stay the same and that is what matters. It isn't great but it isn't bad.

We get a little too much fan service at times and a few references to the memes of the series. Hank's Japanese half-brother Junichiro even makes a brief appearance. One of the dumbest things they did was finally reveal what that "shin jelly" item that Cotton used to use in the original series was. It was a snake oil item that Cotton was told would regrow his shins for him. That manosphere episode I mentioned opens with Hank, Junichiro and GH receiving money from a class action lawsuit over it.

The series as a whole feels a bit rushed. The pacing is very off, especially in that first episode. They cram a lot in for trailer bait material, and to really hit home how much things have changed. The series felt a bit directionless at times. There is really only one reoccurring season long story, and it involves Bobby and Connie rekindling their friendship. Some episodes came across more as connected vignettes rather than a episode long plot.

There of course are tributes to Hardwick and Joss. The last episode of the series literally ends with Joss's memorial tribute. The last episode doesn't really do much and doesn't have any form of a properly season-ending plot. They don't do a cliffhanger as a bait to ensure another season, but the fact that they don't treat it anything at all like it could be the last episode of the series kind of confirms that they'll probably do at least one more season for the revival.

Overall, it is just another revival series. I wasn't expecting much so I wasn't let down, but it is just another example of one of these revivals that don't have to exist.

Just revving up the new season. The pilot was a bit cringe with them referencing the cultural shift since the last season but I'm really enjoying it now that every other line isn't about Uber or hybrids

I’m out of town atm and can’t watch it yet, but I did see this and it makes me laugh.

Bobby’s face really sells it.

I'm guessing with some episodes, they're using the late Hardwick's voice work because I'm noticing Dale's voice fluctuating between episodes. The new actor's voice for Dale isn't quite as good. He sounds more nasal, but all the other characters sound the same before the revival.

The first episode did not give a strong impression. I'm five episodes in, and the pilot doesn't feel like it has an A/B plot, or ANY plot. It just felt like: "hey kids, how would King of the Hill characters react to CURRENT YEAR America?!" No structure, just rapid fire gags. Also, Bill Dauterive was bed-ridden and obese from his introduction, now next episode he's just slightly fatter. Did Hank really fix Bill THAT fast?

So far, I'm liking the revival season. Also, is it me or is the Black guy that lived in the Hill house voiced by Keith David?

Daily reminder to celebrate the contributions of ProZD to the voice acting industry.

Apparently the new VA is not even Laotian. Knowing Asian cultures that is probably even more offensive to them if they are even offended at all.
Thank God that fucker didn't get to voice Khan.

That character is voiced by Keith David. I felt the same about the pilot. Everyone was wondering how they'll handle "current year" world, so it feels like Judge decided to just rip the bandaid off and throw everything at the wall just to get it all out of the way in the first episode.

To be fair to them, I guess I kind of understand it. There is symbolism there about how much stuff we have to deal with and get worked up over in our lives. While I still don't like the episode, I feel there still is this basis of a message: society needs to calm down about a lot stuff. There are things we have to fix, but it isn't the end of the world and we can ultimately fix everything.

The second episode, the beer episode, had a heartwarming ending to it while establishing Bobby's adult arc. Bobby, like Hank, is competitive and passionate about his craft. In his case, culinary arts. Perfect. Both Hank and Bobby let competition get into the way of bonding together over beer, so they both dropped out.

Bobby did not fall too far from the tree. He can be as stubborn and unfamiliar as Hank.

I don't know, I'm one episode in and it's pretty fucking good. The line "when you get to the end of Netflix you get something called a wellness check. "
Absolutely fucking killed me. Made me choke on my food. And anti mask dale is a fucking hilarious bit.

Honestly, it could've gone either way with him. Since he is anti-government, he probably ran for mayor since the government wanted to mandate how he lived or say that COVID-19 was planned by the government.

See Dale wasn't just anti COVID mask, he was anti mask in general. It's the right type of subversion that just fits Dale.

It was ok, I’ll just treat the first one as an introduction and not a real episode.

But

The Samoa cookie bit was just stupid. It’s believeable, because I’m sure the pozzed scouts have done something exactly like that by now, but Hank’s reaction was stupid. People called it when they said Hank was going to have make all of the concessions to new beliefs just to be “nice” and have “respectable” conservatism portrayed. They even pulled the “it’s nice to be kind” I.e. bend to whatever we say is good at the moment.

It would’ve been nice for Hank to just acknowledge that they changed it, not make a fuss to literal little girls, but keep using the original name for himself. It would’ve fit with accepting that times change, but that doesn’t mean you have to always change in the way they do.

I would say we dodge a bullet but it's more like we me dodged one and got hit with another because the new actor is so fucking dogshit.

Exactly what I thought but looked at IMDb and doesn't list a credit under Keith's page.
It is Keith David he was confirmed before the season aired. Honestly I don't hate him, he doesn't add or take way anything so he ends off being just fine.

This shit is great for posting out of context

Let's all say it... The series should've ended after Lucky's Wedding Suit

That GH/Cotton flashback sequence of how much of a "beta" Hank is was very unexpected. It was a surprise we got to see a couple of past scenes with Cotton, very reminiscent of the first season, where they showed him in flashbacks in Hank's childhood life Perhaps we see more of those scenes with Hank and GH, since he is his father's kid (in a sense, he reminds me of ww2 era cotton)
