It was a combo and a doozy. Obviously, better lawyer. The law was also on his side. The only action against Quasi that wasn't a total non-starter on its face (because Rick's lawyers were utterly incompetent) was the subpoena seeking his identity.
So getting his identity was the only matter before the court. If the court just gave Pig his identity, it would moot the whole issue, so before giving Hamlinson that information, the court was required to determine whether he was entitled to it.
The court decided he wasn't.
So why'd Quasi get money despite the "American rule" usually being that both parties bear their own fees? Because of a specific exception for discovery disputes, such as subpoenas. In that case, the rules are reversed and whoever loses the dispute owes the other side's costs and attorney fees.
So not only did Rick not get to find out who Quasi is, he also had to pay him, adding injury to insult. Total FFWBT Death.
