I don't think BPD is so much a diagnosis as it is a cluster of personality traits. Back in the day, we'd just call it being an utter cunt. It's not that somebody is mentally unwell, they just have unpleasant and unlikeable personality characteristics. Quite often, they can conceal how unpleasant they are until you've been sucked in to a relationship with them.

It used to be that they said it was an untreatable condition. These days, they've modified that and say that cognitive behaviour therapy can produce some improvement but the chances are pretty fucking slim. As with most of these things, you've really got to want to be a different person and your personality traits mitigate against that -- BPD's think the problem lies with other people, not with them.

But all of this is really just a roundabout way of agreeing with you. It's not an illness, just a cluster of personality traits. In the past, evil would be a more common way of describing people who had those features.
