When I speak of a place like Creedmore the population is the violently and severely mentally ill.

I’ve read stories about institutions like Creedmore before, and tbh they make the ideological push for de-institutionalization seem less irrational. Were all state hospitals that bad? Because here, in Sweden, I still occasionally meet old people who spent time in long-term institutions, and they genuinely describe it as preferable to assisted living. They had company, purpose, staff that mostly treated them well even if they were in the throes of a psychotic episode and they felt safe.

That said, what on earth would any kind of psychiatric institution do for someone like Vicky? She’s not psychotic where involuntary pharmacological treatment might make her more likely to make better decisions. She’s not depressed. She’s personality disordered, and as such she probably has a lot of anxiety, but that’s not something institutional care would fix, other than keeping her and her ilk away from the rest of us.

Basically Vicky is just a bona fide difficult person and as much as I dislike her, I don’t want a society where someone can be whisked away to Broadmoor for being a pain in the ass.

No, Creedmore (which is a state institution but services NYC) was where the worst of the worst were sent. Others were there, but it was also where you sent people that couldn’t go anywhere else.

I’ve done research and visited some of the old state lunatic asylums and the grounds are positively idyllic. Much of the horror is overblown because they are being interpreted with a modern lens. Society was harsh as fuck, so it was reflected in the institutions. Drugs fundamentally changed the way they operated starting in the 1959’s but until then your only options was the use of physical restraints and discipline for behavior modification. The old Practicality is now viewed as cruelty. I remember one story told as an example of the terrible cruelty of them they had the teeth pulled of one patient…because the crazy retard had been viciously biting the shit out of the staff for years. I guess I’m not much of a bleeding heart because that seemed logical to me. They had to care for the man and got tired of being viciously bit by him.

The way the hospitals operated varied from state to state, you were much better off to not be crazy in a large metro area that had to deal with a large population and transients. If you went to the “wards for the criminally insane” you were in for a hard time.

The places that serviced the feeble minded, the non-violent lunatics, misbehaving wives and the paranoid ran the gamut. I think the fact that most of the patients had actual responsibilities and duties, commiserating with their mental facilities, kept them a lot better off than the bored drugged ward zombies of today. Working was incentivized and earned privileges it also kept them busy. Unlike today the institutions were nearly self-sufficient at times. The biggest problem with them is the flimsy reasons someone could be kept and held there. It was a place you could get rid of an inconvenient wife because you found a better option or punish an adult relative for not conforming. (Strict divorce laws made it a different era for bad marriages). The various experimental treatments they tried out were also pretty fucked.

They weren’t places anyone wanted to go, but that also meant people who could reign their behaviors in did so out of fear of being sent to the asylum and those that were truly sick (like the homeless we see on the streets today) did get care, shelter and structure in their lives. A schizo in the state asylum was better off than the filth covered schizo battling the voices on the streets, isolated in his own private hell.

I’ve been struggling heavily since mistreatment from a doctor left me within a couple of minutes of death, and the only reason I lived was because I had friends watching me in shifts and someone noticed something was wrong. and even then I had treatment withheld for more than 6 hours.

like I am properly fucked in the head from my experience. On top of that since I spent 3 weeks in the hospital I have so many costs adding up, and I have to move in 5 days and have nowhere to go (finding an accessible place is impossible)

Also "I'm supposed to be lying in bed eating beaucoup snacks and working on my papers from last semester" is such a hilarious distillation of her whole personality. I've read some stuff on cross cultural psychiatry and how, say, bulimia basically appeared from scratch in the 80s, but genuine anorexia has existed for centuries. Manic depression and melancholic depression show up throughout history, but nobody thought shit life syndrome was clinical until Prozac.

So, what did BPD look like pre-Tumblr? Were they threatening suicide and getting locked up on a regular basis? Did they end up at freudian analysts? Did that help?

It existed but it wasn’t tolerated very well by society. They did get put into institutions but usually the more extreme social stigma of their behaviors could cause did help mitigate it for the less extreme examples. BPD seemed to go hand in hand with alcoholism. Trips to jail and the loony bin were not fun. They had a lot more cycle through IRL relationships and were hyper social.

Threatening suicide did not get you tossed into a psych ward, actually attempting suicide did.

Susan Tyrell is an interesting case study in BPD, but so was Marylin Monroe. Psychoanalysis didnt seem to help MM. “Fat City” and “A Woman Under the Influence” are interesting films that I think give insight into how women with BPD (or exhibiting BPD behaviors) were treated decades ago before the internet, before “mental health treatment” was common or fashionable.

The asylum system wasn’t nearly as bad as it was made out to be.

They used one particularly terrible institution as an example of all of them, and that’s how the campaign against mental asylums got rolling. (A journalist wrote an expose working at the worst of the worst.)

Unfortunately, this happened at a time where Republicans were rallying against big government and the left was taken ill by a particularly delusional idea: That mentally ill people were made WORSE by DA SYSTEM, and if left to their own devices and some meditation and shit, they’d get magically better.

So for both the left and the right the idea that if we just close all these big, mean asylums down and leave mental healthcare to the community, felt like a smashing good plan.

It’s a shame, because someone like Victoria would be ideally suited for an asylum. No responsibility, no worries. Just nurses taking care of her, while she scribbles and draws all day.

”Atypical depression” is what she was diagnosed with, and she ran with that diagnosis for a while, but from what I understand, she actually accepted that it was BPD all along some time before she died. Too bad she wasted all that time and money on ineffective drugs and, yes, a fuckton of psychoanalysis.
