I was surprised that this thread apparently didn't exist so here you go, curated anime tracks that are actually worth listening to and won't make you die from cringe and embarrassment if they suddenly play over your phone.

The opening track for Elfen Lied is one of the most beautiful and somber songs you'll hear all day which is fitting because it's a brutal and dark anime that's also a love story. More passion and thought went into this one song than goes into most modern anime and the show is damn good too.



Susumu Hirasawa needs no introduction for those in the know but the man is a legend in the japanese industrial/electronic scene and has made multiple famous anime film OSTs but this is by far his magnum opus. Parade from the surreal animated film Paprika. A song that's joyful with a subtle underlying feeling of discomfort and "wrongness" portrayed through distorted vocals, used as a vessel to depict a parade as an object of sheer terror and destruction. (it's a super surreal and cerebral plotline that inspired the far inferior western movie Inception. Just watch it and it will make sense in context)

A lot of Shiro Sagisu’s tracks absolutely slap. The Casshern soundtrack kicks ass.

The Starship Troopers OVA is also much better than it has any right to be. I could honestly expect to hear shit like this over the radio in America.

Every track from the original FLCL is a banger and I think there's one song that's only pretty good while the rest is amazing from Progressive and Alternative. Not sure if that counts since they just licensed the existing music from The Pillows (they might have had the pillows do covers of their own songs for the sequels so they'd be cheaper to license lol) but it's all good stuff. Last Dinosaur and My Foot are my favorites

 
Here you go nigga, I happen to remember this one also funny note they used a radiohead song(paranoid android i think) for their outro, this animu from memory wasn't that great, had a strong first half and flubbed it hard in the second half with retarded jap nonesense.
 
I posted about this somewhere else before but:
some jap or weeb included this song as part of some sorta nico nico douga medley the better part of 2 decades ago and it's been living rent free in my head ever since. I haven't watched the show it's from.

Was gonna mentioned this. Sagisu is a spectacular composer with a great variety of compelling and occasionally strange tracks.

He's genuinely completely unique in his field.

Separate one, which I just mention due to the Casshern shout, is the opening to the Kikaider anime, which I definitely feel Elfen Lied took a smidgeon of inspiration from with its slow, melancholic tone.

Space Battleship Yamato
It took a special type of autism to imagine the largest battleship to ever sail the seas fighting across the cosmos to save humanity. But Leiji Matsumoto had it and God bless him for it.
And I know for a fact he has autism because he also made a series about an intergalactic train where a kid sets off to turn himself into an android because robots murdered his mother and he wants to avenge her. The series is called Galaxy Express 999.
