A lot of Trump's basic stated positions had been pretty reasonable and people also had the first term of his where things were generally pretty nice to imagine a Trump 2.0 would go pretty well.

Trump on the campaign trail was talking about how tough he was on Russia, how he wanted to promote manufacturing in the US, work up trade deals like he did with USMCA, and fight illegal immigration and so on. I don't think many expected him to start pussy footing around Russia immediately (yet also berate Ukraine for the audacity of being invaded?), promote manufacturing by increasing tariffs/taxes on everyone, do fake trade deals (that so far seems to have gotten him cheaper luxury cars from Britain), and then start using a gulag.

It's been a weird bait and switch, exacerbated by Trump not getting more professional types like Mnuchin in again and instead hiring on whoever could act as the most eager yes-men.

But it is worth recognizing that the stuff Trump used to bait/appeal to voters is pretty popular and that the explanations for how Trump is screwing things up can get confusing for a lot of people, like the people Trump sent to El Salvador often being innocent of any criminal activity, because many Trump supporters aren't even aware of what all Trump is doing or saying.

Like that knuckles photo has created a lot of confusion where not long ago Trump was angrily defending his idea that Abrego Garcia had Helvetia font tattoos placed directly on the bone of his knuckles.



Then tonight, Ingraham ended up disagreeing with Trump while likely not realizing she was. Because like many Trump supporters she likely has zero idea what all Trump is doing or that he made such a point that there was no 'interpretation' placed on the photo.



It can really be like pulling teeth to get people to recognize that "their team" has fucked up some things or that the whole teams thing is just retarded in general.

Think they actually cut the visa allotment down for H-1B's and trying to tighten rules on them or rather there's people in Trump's admin wanting to do those things.

There has been some funkiness to with randomly starting new processes regarding biometrics or trying to just find about anything they could say is a problem with a visa holder like we saw with student visas getting investigated resulting in people with dismissed traffic violations nearly being deported for it.

Which makes it seem like they're really trying to speed through creating new processes for tightening security on how visas are handed out or allowed to be kept, without making sure what processes they come up don't end up retarded in practice.


There also has been some talk of whether Trump would increase the "prevailing wage" requirement as he had done in 2020, but the way he had done it then had gotten struck down by the courts when attempted the first time around. From what I can tell, what Biden didn't bother trying to defend Trump's' changes in the courts, so instead he withdrew a rule regarding prevailing wages that resulted in:
The practical impact is that an H-1B worker in a job requiring five years of experience generally must be paid higher than 90% of workers in the same or similar occupation in the geographic area.

Though I've seen some Trump supporters thinking this change coming must be due to Trump and being infinitely thankful for him making it. So Trump isn't exactly making it easier to ship in a bunch of H-1Bs, but we also don't really know what he may want to try with them period.

No, his first term sucked too. He was almost as loony then as he is now. The difference is that he had qualified people in his Cabinet who did a reasonable job at keeping him in check (until he fired them, anyway). Now it's just a free-for-all of incompetent, unqualified sycophants.

His response to COVID was abysmal. The vaccine was developed not because of Trump, but in spite of him. Faucci needed full-time security because he was receiving so many death threats from Trump's cult. I never had much use for Pence (still don't), but at least he made sure the COVID task force kept moving forward and certified the 2020 election, while Trump was having toddler tantrums on Twitter.

The cap is mandated by congress and it only applies to new H1-Bs. The additional approvals are for people who are already in on the program and have to renew their visa (usually every 3-6 years). I'm not the biggest fan of the H1-B program but 120k is not really all that unusual.

There's also other things to keep in mind:
1) The discourse right now is about how the big tech companies laid off Americans while asking for more H1-Bs. This isn't really true - a lot of H1-Bs were caught in the layoffs as well. The additional H1-Bs being requested are due to retarded pivots by the big tech companies to focus more on AI. In MSFT's case, they've been gutting their core tech like compilers and systems engineers in favor of more AI people. The skillsets are quite different.
2) I work at a place with a lot of Indian H1-Bs and the general mood among them has been dour. USCIS has gotten much more stringent. Old Biden-era rules allowing for visa interviews to be done remotely are gone and the interviewers are much more adversarial.
3) The new grad employment crisis in SWE is a complicated topic. Recent grads who got into the field due to the hype are of a significantly lower quality than in previous decades, mostly due to them not really having any interest in software outside of what they learned in school and thus showing up to employers with a much weaker skillset. I'm always in favor of hiring juniors and training them but a lot of companies don't want employees that are going to take six months to be productive and would rather hire mid-career engineers that can immediately start producing value within the first month. This has been a long-standing issue in CS education in that CS focuses heavily on theoretical subjects rather than actual application and the unspoken 'rule' being that if you want to get a job you should actively teach yourself how to apply what you learned in school.

The ability for people to create their own echo chambers in general have been a major net negative. Especially as it has created an inability for people to compartmentalize their lives so political opinions in general bleed over into areas and conversations where they shouldn't. I had been guilty of it, but when it started to give me the irrits it is something I've made a very conscious choice to avoid political discussion in general outside of the occasions where 1. it is appropriate and invited and 2. I actually like and trust the person.

I don't mind making fun of politicians and political groups however. I think that should actually be something that is more common, and I find that people who can do it to anyone (including the ones they like) are a lot easier to be around.
