Nixon was pretty much the last person from the 'old' political class to occupy the presidency imo. This was a group of people who saw politics as an actual calling. A lot of the reason that it seems saner is because the media papered things over to manipulate the populace. There were horrific black on white racial crimes back then that were ignored by mainstream publications in order to avoid people noticing a pattern. One I recall had a group of black men go into convenience store with guns. They tied the father up and made the mom drink drain cleaner while they held a gun to the kid's head. They let the dad and kid watch the mom die horribly, then force-fed the kid draino in front of the dad, apparently laughing the whole time because they found it outrageously funny. Another was an old woman being raped to death with a broomstick during a home invasion. The black population in this country was post hoc beatified after the civil rights movement but there's a very good reason that people didn't want to live near them. The white violence against blacks was positively mild compared to what it was responding to.
