Sure that would be great if you could place an order with the manufacturer to the actual spec you want and have it arrive without a 40% or higher markup from a dealership who made no effort to sell it to you after waiting a year. But it doesn't work that way. Even the most basic trim levels of the vehicles those manufacturers sell to fleets(rental cars, businesses, etc.) won't have a manual transmission, and a few of those manufacturers will actually upcharge for a manual(which will never actually be available for you to buy). Depending on the vehicle you're lucky if you can get it with the options and color you actually want.

They do, but yes they're way less common as they're usually on enthusiast cars. I think like half of BMW M2s sold are manuals, for example. If you're looking at all cars sold in the US, it's only a couple percent or so.

A buddy was going to order a new Ford Maverick, picked his custom stuff and even a pretty decent trim package so it wasn't a base model deal. Ford just never made it. They waited out the 1 year delivery expectation and said "Well shucks maybe you can try ordering this year's model!"
