Also, John Walker did nothing wrong in that terrible Falcon and Winter Soldier series. He was the real hero of that show, and the MCU does not deserve him. I'm sure this new movie spent a lot of time dogging on him, right? I'd bet money on it. Disney is far too predictable at this point.

Also saw the movie for free, and like it was alright. It wasn't as hyped as the shills and such said it was but not atrocious dogshit. The worst I can say is that maybe it was a little underwhelming.
But holy fuck the second post credits scene where they discuss the copyright and such is really the closest thing this movie has to abysmal dogshit, and given the Russo Brothers directed that scene, it just paints a grim reminder that even if both Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four are good movies, Avengers Doomsday looms over the horizon as a center of cringe.

The New Avengers all but says that killing the Flagsmasher single handedly ruined his fucking life and resulted in his wife divorcing him because he couldn't stop thinking about the events of the series. Dude got 3 Medals of Honor, something no human being in real life has gotten, and leapt on top of grenades to help people in the past in the line of duty, all of that is thrown out the window because he killed the unarmed terrorist.
Oh I'm sorry, according to Captain Wakanda, I shouldn't be calling them terrorists.

I actually liked Walker's response to that in the film. Someone brings it up, saying he was caught killing an 'innocent' person on video and Walker responds with, "Define innocent." They don't really shit on him in the Thunderbolts -- he looked like he was pretty close to killing Yelena at the start before the others interfered, and he's shown as capable and competent throughout the rest of the movie. The only problem is that in the first half they write him as a sort of impatient blowhard.

Captain America (Steve) went through history killing Nazis, random mooks who hijacked boats, terrorists, aliens, people working with HYDRA or obviously affiliated with them in the modern era. Iron Man's debut movie literally starts out with him killing disgusting, ugly, smelly, incomprehensible Al-Qaeda standins, burning some alive or blowing them up with missiles or repulsor blasts. Why is Walker given so much shit again? I mean the freckled girl and her buddies were sociopathic mass murderers and Falcon goes around making excuses for them. Even Bucky is given less shit and in spite of the fact that he was mind-controlled, has a kill count across history. They even excuse Wakandans assaulting a decorated military hero or a triviality. Did the Thanos Snap just give the MCU verse some horrid brainrot? It must have because they even made an Ice Cream Shop after the guy who murdered OCTILLIONS UPON OCTILLIONS of life both sentient and sapient.

Because the people producing this stuff are so deep into their Identity Politics that they can't see things in terms of individual rights or wrongs, only in terms of group vs. group and they think they need to balance the groups, groups which they themselves assign people to. John Walker needs to be punished as a representative of the group.
I did like that he appeared to be winning against Yelena - a pet peeve of mine is where different power levels are conflated. So the guy with Captain America powers should beat the unaugmented person, given both have very high levels of training too. But the group still kind of merges into each other power-wise. Guardian, Bucky, Walker - all have vaguely defined super robustness and strength. And Yelena almost might as well be. Ghost is the only one who seems markedly different.

Because the former weren't caught on camera. And weren't written as a strawman for police post-Floyd.
Bucky gets a pass because he mostly committed violence against the greatest enemy of all, America.
I can't remember; did he say this with conviction -- as to imply that he feels confident that he did the right thing, and is willing to challenge people on it -- or is it portrayed as semantic weasel words?

This is not a criticism of the poster quoted. I'm using it as a concise example of something that has become increasingly widespread. The value judgements expressed are it was alright, not atrocious dogshit, worst I can say is a little underwhelming. Those are by reference to what is termed a good movie. (Yes it's caveated with "if" but that's only relevant to the as yet unseen FF movie as Thunderbolts has been seen and assessed.)
My big caveat is there's a danger in being excessively analytical in stripping out elements like this resulting in misrepresentation. (e.g. I could have suggested that saying it's not "atrocious dogshit" means it is dogshit, just not the atrocious variety. That would be a step too far.)
The point is, have standards fallen to the extent that a movie that is alright, not atrocious dogshit, a worst a little underwhelming, is a good movie?
Oh and as to concern about the treatment of John Walker but relief that the character has not been completely destroyed....... there's still the opportunity for complete character assassination in the movies to come.
Anyway, I've got more windmills to tilt at.

The idea behind John is clear. In-universe, the US thought Captain America was just a square-jawed white man who loves his country, so that's why they chose him to be Steve's successor. The issue is that they also hint that he's as noble as Steve was, down to jumping on a grenade.
What made the grenade scene work was that it showed even when he was still an untrained weakling, Steve was willing to die (as far as he knew) if it meant protecting people. John claimed he did it four times with the real deal and managed to find a way to suppress the explosion. If they wanted to show how different John was from Steve, the conversation should have gone like this:
John isn't even really an asshole to Sam and Bucky. He's not condescending or making derogatory comments about them being Cap's "sidekicks". It's amazing how much the writers of that show failed to make a strawman unlikable.
It reminds me of the final season of Jessica Jones saying Trish is going too by far killing people... when she's in the same province as the fucking Punisher, someone with an even higher body count.

He says it sardonically and with cynicism. As if to not so much say "I was right" as to say "who are you to judge me."
Which is believable for a guy whose been beaten over the head about it repeatedly by society because he no longer expects to convince anybody.
EDIT: I presume this is what you're all talking about? Was the guy actually guilty? He says "it wasn't me" at the end. He appeared to be surrendering so does seem like he was wrong to kill the guy.
EDIT EDIT: Honestly, this clip makes the show look quite good.

Don't be fooled.
He should never have been in that position in the first place, he was only in that position because he as a character exists to make white people look/feel bad and justify the existence of Captain Falcon. It is important to remember that this show came out less than a year post-Floyd, EVERYTHING is about race and policing -- it's not a subtext within the story, the story exists as a vehicle for the sentiment. Walker as a character exists solely as a condemnation of Derek Chauvin and every demographic that Derek Chauvin belongs to.
Then I hate it. Society should not want him as an Avenger with that attitude, and he should not want to be an Avenger with that attitude.
