The problem is that this dipshit district judge told the State Department to just pay everything, every claim from everybody, do not check for completion, fraud, or anything else. Within hours. Yes, that means he ordered relief for parties that were not involved with the suit and yes that means he is ordering the State Department to violate Federal law. Engineering is better but you also have to take in account that cars used to be cheaper. They where never expected to last a decade. A 1968 chevy truck was around $1900 MSRP.. Thats 21,000 today. Now we have people driving around in $75000 pickups and 96 month car loans are a thing. Even in the 1980s most working people could afford a new K-car every few years. I don't think there was a planned obsolesces built in back in the day, just that cars where built to hit a price point that was affordable. Standard car loans used to be 24 and 36 month.
