Today, the Federal Trade Commission launched a public inquiry to better understand how technology platforms deny or degrade users’ access to services based on the content of their speech or affiliations, and how this conduct may have violated the law.

Censorship by technology platforms is not just un-American, it is potentially illegal. Tech firms can employ confusing or unpredictable internal procedures that cut users off, sometimes with no ability appeal the decision. Such actions taken by tech platforms may harm consumers, affect competition, may have resulted from a lack of competition, or may have been the product of anti-competitive conduct.

The FTC issued a Request for Information (RFI) requesting public comment on how consumers may have been harmed by technology platforms that limited their ability to share ideas or affiliations freely and openly.

“Tech firms should not be bullying their users,” said FTC Chairman Andrew N. Ferguson. “This inquiry will help the FTC better understand how these firms may have violated the law by silencing and intimidating Americans for speaking their minds.”

Tech platform users who have been banned, shadow banned, demonetized, or otherwise censored are encouraged to share their comments in response to the RFI. The FTC is interested in understanding how consumers—including by potentially unfair or deceptive acts or practices, or potentially unfair methods of competition—have been harmed by the policies of tech firms.

The public will have until May 21, 2025 to submit a comment. Once submitted, comments will be posted to Regulations.gov. If consumers would prefer to file a private report with the FTC instead, they can go to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and click “Report Now.”

The comments are annoying to browse but some are entertaining. Many complaints about plebbit and also some shit like this:

Any reports related to Kiwi Farms should say that Liz Jones is a rapist and attach proof.
It looks like someone manually goes through each submission and redacts anything mentioning names, accounts, subreddits etc. Although Trump and Elon Musk seem to be allowed?

Some entries have the attachments completely unavailable for public download.

Maybe the people reviewing the shit get the unredacted versions of it though?

I guess no-no words are also restricted:

I know bits and pieces of everything that happened through watching mad at the Internet but does anyone have a list of all the companies and what they did to the farms.

It's a long series of events over years with many moving pieces and names. It might be best to organize the information so that any user can read what happened and send a cohesive and useful comment.

This RFI feels more like it's targeted at u/PM_ME_NAKED_JACKDAWS who drunkenly made a somewhat coherent post on r/AmItheAsshole arguing that being gifted the wrong funko pop isn't grounds for a divorce but who got banned anyway for sprinkling in a bunch of gamer language.
Feels less like an RFI meant for website level de-platforming efforts. Still worth a shot to send in a comment, especially as site performance has degraded after Cloudflare dropped service which essentially impacts all users.

Agreed. It should be noted the use of the language "platforms" and not "service/hosting providers".

Regardless it's still pretty valid to call large hosting companies "platforms" and its just language autism at the end of the day. Supposedly your dear congress member or someone at the FTC or FCC will actually read this shit to inform their policies! (spoiler alert: they most likely won't)

It reminds me of when I would unfairly ban tons of people in the DSP subforum and they would whine and complain and I would respond like this:

(obviously I hope they do actually read the shit and do some policy changes but its hard to not be cynical)

This sounds like exactly the same boomerisms that push to eliminate Section 230.

Not volunteering for it, but could someone put together a well worded comment others can use as a template to submit the plightsperging the oppressed kiwi farmers? Maybe including issues like the transit level censorship by tier 1's, removal from online payment processors, coordinated efforts between industry via hate groups masquerading as non profits such as "stopnetworkedharassment" etc?

Yeah, check for errors. I'd post it myself but I'm not an American.

"A certain ranking member of Honeycomb.io, an online observability analysis tool, has leveraged their connections with Google, contacts within the industry and their gender identity to pressure CDN provider Cloudflare and numerous Tier 1 ISPs to shut down and censor criticism and public evidence of their online history, including their promotion of a fraudulent suicide hotline, initiating aggressive and unpopular DEI policies at Google, accusations of pressuring colleagues to engaged in sexually deviant behaviour and a self-admission of committing sexual assault. Cloudflare and numerous ISPs capitulated and have resulted in an unprecedented threat to the freedom and connectivity of the modern Internet, with Cloudflare now being inundated with hundreds of requests to withdraw their services from multiple sites. This individual has continued this crusade through a clandestine network of non-profits under the guise of 'ending harassment' and weaponizing misinformation and the media."

I'm honestly unsure of how much we'll get out of this - I think we might be a bit too spicy even for this government. Remember people like Elon Musk do have quite specific limits on what they allow that we engage in, such as the art formerly known as doxing.

I would guess that a non copy-pasted complaint would go further than one that just comes across as brigading (sorry, the term I should be using is "networked harassment").
Like write your own complaint in 2-3 paragraphs and mention companies involved and you don't even necessarily have to mention kiwifarms itself.

(my "guess" above is based on the scientific fact that a change.org petition has never achieved a single thing)

also: for those not aware, several popular anti-reddit twitter accounts as well as youtubers have weaponized their fanbases into submitting shit

Any reports related to Kiwi Farms should say that Liz Jones is a rapist and attach proof.

:)

(so it turns out mentioning liz fong jones won't get censored)

If anyone needs some names to mention, here's a list
  • Matthew Prince, CEO of CloudFlare
    • Dropped KF's DDOS protection, allowing it to be attacked by a coordinated DDOS operation intended to knock KF offline (see: the infamous Keffals clip)
  • Mike Leber, Founder and CEO of Hurricane Electric
    • Added a BGP filtering rule denying traffic to and from KF, meaning if you attempted to access the website through your connection, your ISP's ISP was the one blocking you from reaching it
  • Bob Ferguson, WA governor, former WA state attorney general
  • Martin Mallow, CEO of Key-Systems
    • Straight up stole Kiwifarms.pl without notice

I would maybe keep in mind that the letter asks for instances where you weren't able to share your ideas and shit, so it is maybe appropriate to say what kind of political stuff you were talking about being prevented by this (in this khantext it might be "I wanted to talk critically about a vocal transgender activist who ended up being a scammer" or something like that)

I'm also uncertain what the value is in namedropping a bunch of tech people is vs just naming their companies. Namedropping feels like it is a vindictive action, just mentioning the company seems like enough.

TLDR: read the actual FTC letter here: https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/P251203CensorshipRFI.pdf and write a complaint based on what is asks for. I'm guessing that linking to news articles showing shit that happened (or even including screenshots showing it) is more than appropriate to show "proof"

They actually should, they should force peddit to get rid of a ban on duplicate subpeddits. Get banned by a tranny janny, make your own /r/, with Freecell and demimondaines.
