It's attempt to show 'strength' and 'unity' and that they're totally not upset Trump sidestepped all of them to negotiate a ceasefire with Russia. I view Starmer's comment personally as acknowledging the USA's position as top dog, and it's an known that the peace between Russia and Ukraine hinges on America's backing. I think Trump's plan to secure mineral rights in the area and other financial recompense to the tune of half a trillion (Likely to be negotiated down - Art of the Deal!) will give the US a long term interest in keeping the area safe. The 'special relationship' between the USA and the UK means that the UK will naturally align with American interests politically, even if you'll hear a lot of crying from Libs and politicians. Meanwhile, Macron just wanted the EU to man the border because he wants the EU to move past being an economic/political body into some quasi-state, but then Germany decided they didn't want to pledge any troops which kind've of delegitimises the idea that the EU can be a confederation of states a la United States. I talked about it in the A&N thread about the meeting being called to begin with. Absent of whinging about the USA, the immediate lack of decisiveness and unity on sending a token force of soldiers is a massive fumble in of itself.
