The Tales of Series

I've only ever played Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Symphonia. I don't really remember Tales of Symphonia very much but I remember Tales of Phantasia. It was one of the coolest looking snes games I've played. I liked it a little better than Star Ocean though the two games always felt really similar to me. I'll also never forget the one line from the fan translation I played the game on. They were talking on a boat or something and your character's talking to one of your party members about the two girl party members and out of nowhere dude's just like 'yeah the one girl seems nice but I bet the other one fucks like a tiger.' The idea of a super Nintendo game with a line like that just kind of blew my mind, even if it was probably a creative translation.

I seriously clicked on this thread to bring that very line up. It was Klarth talking about Arche in the DeJap translation.

DeJap were pretty infamous for inserting their own "humor" into games, and from what I understand that line was created from whole cloth by them. There's an official translation on the PSX. I've never played it, but I hear it's much more accurate.

I started playing the GBA version at one point and stopped because I preferred the dejap translation. Lol seeing the character names and dejap brings back some memories though. Discovering all those unported jrpgs and searching for translation patches and shit trying to find ones that were decent enough to actually use to the play the games.

I never realized it until I checked Clyde Mandelin's article on Tales of Phantasia a couple of years back but there are way more translations for Tales of Phantasia than you'd think. The DeJap translation is definitely funnier but I am glad there's something closer to the original Japanese for when I eventually get around to playing it.

At the time I played it I think the dejap one was the only translation available. Or at least it was the only one that was mostly complete. I don't even think it was 100% complete at the time I played it.

Okay so i finished the fuck out of Berseria and got Vesperia on Steam. Any recommendations for Vesperia? Also is it better on English or Japanese?

So if it is definitive Vesperia go jap all the way because aside from gaining Sandy Fox as Patty they just about fumbled everything up for the new content. Troy was not asked back as Yuri so he's replaced with Grant George who....really sucks because his performance is flat and he doesn't really have much range. The other huge issue is they fucked up the dub sound mixing (and this was BEFORE covid) so everyone sounds really weird. Also I'm still unclear on Judith's actress. Its apparently some blonde woman I've never heard of.

The extra content is fun

Play it with a guide by your side. I know its annoying but you can miss so much content by just playing the game normally. Japanese i guess since all the voice lines are properly voiced and not half assed.

Unless they patched it, the biggest problem with using the Japanese voices in Vesperia is that conversations in battles aren't subtitled, so you end up missing a lot during boss / story battles. As for the English voices, they re-cast a few major characters (including the protagonist, Yuri) for the newly added events, so once you stumble onto new events or skits the voices suddenly change compared to the other 80% of the game.

This is probably the worst thing about playing the modern Tales Of games (Graces, Vesperia, Abyss) undubbed because nobody ever bothered to add a mod or subtitle the battle conversations. Luckily the guys who did the Destiny DC and Rebirth translation seem to have that down.

Now i think what youre referring to when you say play with a guide, you mean the secret missions? If so i always tend to go first playthrough blind just to experience the game and then ill play it with resources. English doesnt sound to bad(Berseria is still queen)

Side Quests and Side Content too. You can miss out on artes (Tiger Blade for Yuri and some more for other party members), titles, weapons, and some special items as well if you don't do them when you can. There are even secret conversations with other party members depending on when you decide to sleep at an inn at night. You don't have to do EVERYTHING, but unless you're deciding to do a second playthrough you should give it a look. I'm doing a second playthrough right now myself and I can't believe how much time sensitive content there is in this game.

On the topic of Vesperia, I really wish they implemented Narikiri dolls like in the Team Destiny games, having 4 Ritas or early Patty sound hilarious.

Ah ill keep it in mind for my second playthrough.

Got my hands on the Graces Remaster, it's actually good unlike the Symphonia one and playing the Switch version on Emulator at 140FPS is something I didn't know I needed. I'm going to miss Pascal's Toro outfit and I'm waiting until somebody mods that and the artes ball back in.

Also I'm a part ways into Rebirth and I think the best way to describe the content of the game would be different. Compared to Destiny and Graces and the like, it's very much focused on resource management over everything with you having to manage a bar which has certain benefits based on if it's full or empty. You also barely have any healing with the main healer having one or two healing dedicated artes by level 30. Most of your regeneration comes from you hitting attacks properly when your Force Gauge is full. This plus the three lane battle system make for a very different Tales of game but I'm still having a fun time. Tytree can still kind of combo.

I'm really glad Bamco added in subtitles themselves too, now we finally can confirm Hubert is saying Instant Valse instead of Instant Balls.

Graces is interesting so far. The costumes are cool. I like the ones the Japanese guy designed and the cameo ones although for Cheria I only have Natalias because fuck off beating the card game on hard to get Rita. The missing ones like idols and anime ones were they in the original PS3 version? The towns....I swear are there only three continents because there doesn't seem to be many towns. It feels small compared to the previous game. I see this is where the turtlez originated. Currently at the part where you fight Richard and then he goes nuts and encases himself in a big ass web egg thing?

Cast is great. @UnKillShredDur Laura Bailey gives a really great performance as Cheria. Each party member works.. Imo Graces, Symphonia, Abyss, and Berseria have the strongest casts. I would say Vesperia too but they are overrated despite the fact that I like them as well. (I can't get over Troy not being asked back. Grant George was a terrible choice and fuck Matt Mercer for turning it down allegedly. Its too jarring. I expected better because it really does ruin the dub. Complete my ass)

I think oddly enough next to Berseria's the Graces default outfits are probably my favorites and Xillias outfits. Cast is solid too. But then most of the series have excellent casts aside from Zestria and Arise. I will never forgive them for getting rid of the anime style drawings and skits in the latter.

Xillia duology and Legendia are the only ones I haven't played. (Also Hearts, Destiny, Eternia, etc) I know people want Abyss badly but I would like Xillia duology first. Is there any indication other than the leaked listing that hints we might get it? The blonde looks cool. Milla. I remember fighting her in Berseria. And one of the characters' dresses can be worn by Presea in Symphonia although it seems like they had to trim it down.

I think Graces might literally be the most underrated entry in the series outside of the gameplay. For years I've heard people say the cast is one of the weaker ones in the series but doing my replay I've come to like them way more than at least Symphonia and Vesperia's cast (that might change if I do a replay Yuri is too good). Berseria's cast is still probably my favorite, their dynamics are fantastic. The Graces cast bounce off of eachother amazingly and the DLC F arc, has some of the best skits in the series bar none.

I like most of the outfits for Graces but I have to imagine that Inomata was taking the piss for half of the outfits. Asbel's default outfit is so goofy that there are skits actively making fun of how stupid looking it is and Hubert's Strathan Avenger outfit is so dumb that I'm almost certain she did that out of some intentional resentment for him. There's also a weird ass furry design for one Malik's samurai armors??? I have no clue what she was smoking for half of these.

Also the lowered amount of towns compared to something like Symphonia is probably because you really don't get any meaningful form of fast travel until like the end of the game basically. You have to walk around the overworld and constantly talk to the Turtlez in order to do any short form of fast travel. I like the overworld but I'd be pulling hair out if there were even more towns I had to travel to do sidequests.

Also pro gamer tip for the card game, you can listen to the line, pause the game right away, and look up the line. It's almost necessary to do this as the great majority of the lines are from games that had never or have still never been brought over to English. It's 100% rigged dood.

If you aren't you should also try other party members besides Asbel. This is the start of all party members having unique mechanics as opposed to just being Asbel but magic or Bow Asbel. I'll always shill Pascal as a character due to how unique her gameplay is from every character in the series. Zoning with your physicals and getting in there with your magic makes for an incredibly busted character as a good majority of your spells have the ability to juggle large packs of enemies in one way or another.

I finished my playthrough of Graces Remastered (third overall playthrough) and I have to say some of the bosses in the F arc I thought were complete BS on a first playthrough became slightly more fun after I cranked the difficulty up to Evil and learned some basic combos for some of the cast. That final boss is still a strugglefest though.

The problem with the card game is that the cpu has sonic speed so they literally zoom to get the card
