I maintain that what really caused Nick's mental decay was his poor diet on top of drugs and liquor. Normally it takes years and years of heavy drug and alcohol abuse to wreck your brain as bad as Nick has. Nick did a speed run and torched his brain in perhaps a year or two, and that's because the Dorito-a-Day diet is so utterly deficient in nutrition while the heavy alcoholism further denies the body the nutrition it needs. Malnourishment causes brain damage, and Nick was getting negative amounts of nutrients as alcohol robs it from the body. Nick literally starved himself into irreversible mental retardation.

I bet Nick's typical inability to understand social cues was at play. I can honestly believe he thought "I'll do anti-drug PSAs on Youtube" was a winning offer to the prosecutor that would reduce his sentence. The problem is Nick has been speculated to draw a salary as a member of the Trusts Board. Which weirdly likely qualifies as sufficient employment (he likely makes more than the averaged drugged up skell before the court) while at the same time doing nothing that actually keeps him busy and out of trouble or likelihood to reoffend.

It seems strange to me that he can't see another person that wants to see him based on a court order.
