Did they use different writes for Vatican City vs Gizeh in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle?
Vatican City felt like old school Indy movies, Indy behaved and spoke in the gruff and tough manner made famous in the trilogy, the characters (particularly the priest, excellent character) and interactions aren't shoehorned in and you certainly don't sniff any post modernist weirdo jargon. Indy even has a couple voice lines that are respectful or even praising religion, something I'd never expect from a modern AAA game. It makes sense that Indy would be knowledgeable about and respectful of Catholicism - he did go to Sunday School.
Then you get to Gizeh, and there is a complete 180 in Indy's mannerisms and his interaction with Gina.
In VC, Indy kept to his "I work alone" schtick and Gina, the newly introduced sidekick character, kept pestering him in clever ways and eventually, like a father, Indy gave in and let Gina tag along, where she wound up helping him in the long run. Nothing forced, Indy isn't emasculated, no alarms ring in the intuition. Once they get on the zeppelin, however, this interaction flips and now its Indy shyly pestering Gina for information on her life, asking her to let him tag along to find her sister. Indy is all of a sudden gentler, duller, and you get the sense he's just a sidekick to Gina and her lesbian friend - a mere supplement to their journey. Indy talks and behaves as if the zeppelin evaporated 50% of his testosterone.
One of the first lines in Gizeh that sticks out wildly is from Voss in the car - "there's nothing more easy to manipulate than an insecure male." I think they pulled that line from a freshman year gender studies paper! There was nothing like that in VC, almost as if they were trying to suck you in with the good writing before unleashing the dogshit once you're already hooked.
Take the intro to Nawal with the snake. Yes, Indy's scared of snakes but he freaks out, looking like a buffoon in the process while the two women look upon him patronizingly, as a mother might look upon her toddler. Nawal wryly tells him to feed the snake and instead of just saying no, as you'd expect, Indy, like a toddler, begrudgingly agrees. He then undergoes a goofball 2 minute background tantrum trying to feed a snake while the two women talk about whats really important - making it clear these two strong, intelligent women don't need a man like Indy, who is reduced to a childlike buffoon. He finally steps around the veranda and says "I fed the snake" like a kid saying he finally tied his shoes. And of course, Nawal is lesbian, because why make anything subtle?
Bottom line, Indy seemed to be neutered going from VC to Gizeh, with a tonal shift from OG Indiana Jones to a thesis in postmodernism. Did they use different writers for the two regions ?
