He refused Iranian aid, ignored advice that HTs was planning something.

He was asked to open up another front against Israel and refused and basically just was placing all his eggs in the normalize ties with the gulf states basket.

The rapidity of this somewhat suggests a backroom deal which, if true, means Russia will quietly sign deals to confirm the status of these bases. Don't expect the rebels will push too hard given the subsidies from the land alone will probably keep their government afloat long enough to make it permanent. Barring outside influence of course.

If Assad really did just give up, it'd be hardly surprising if Russia did some dealings with some new faction. Especially since there's still something like 4 rival governments in Syria, and the assorted other factions. If your current ally won't keep going, just pick another retard from the pile.

Between this and Afghanistan I wonder how many other stable countries whose government seems secure but are actually susceptible to a blitz like this? More fun to think about, what first world country would be most likely to fall to something like this? Two common thread is majority support for the rebel faction outside of the main city, and the military buckling. A lot of the regime's troops either sympathize with the rebels, apathetic enough to not fight, or pragmatic enough to know they wouldn't win and the rebels aren't interested in killing the low rank grunts.

Turkish forces in Syria continue their offensive against the Kurds.
I don't think they fought Assad at all during this.

In the immediate aftermath of Assad's government collapsing, it is being reported the generally Turkish backed Syrian Interim Government has started attacking Kurdish forces in a northern part of Syria.

Turkey intends to eliminate the Kurdish presence at least west of the Euphrates in the near future (Manbij and adjacent areas will be occupied by the SNA). Areas east of the Euphrates are also under threat.

Someone needs to have a talk with the Turks.

Putin informed him that he was going to allow Syria to be thrown to the wolves to save the west some face when Ukraine formally yields a good chunk of their land to Russia.

For allowing that to happen, Assad got assurances he will get to live in exile instead of getting the Gaddafi special.
