If I put it in a mug and slurp it up then I'm drinking it so therefore it's a drink but if I'm eating it with a spoon in a bowl then that's food.

Bobba tea is made of tea, so it's a drink. Soup is usually eaten as a meal by itself or with other dishes. So it's food most of the times.

I've never really considered balls of tapioca to be food before. It's more like a food ingredient.

Also, soup is a food because it doesn't satisfy thirst and is regularly consumed alongside an accompanying drink. Look at say, Miso soup, it's just a salty liquid with some tofu and green onions in it. You can drink it yet it's regularly served with green tea as a drink.

That's what I wanted to add; in regards to the topic, I think this is just pointless semantics, meaning, it can go either way depending on your criteria, which doesn't hold any truth beyond any subjective level.

It's primarily intended as a beverage. It'd be like counting orange juice with pulp as a food. Pieces of food being in something doesn't necessitate its categorization as a food.

Even frozen water is considered a food, like flavored shaved ice, despite being almost entirely water. So it's a drink if you can drink it and its primary purpose is hydration. Cheese does not meet that criteria.

But not all liquids are for hydration. Technically brine is a liquid but isn't intended as a beverage for hydration.
