The idea could be to trick people who are a little nervous or impressionable into believing that the system has them down as having voted, therefore if they go out to vote it might look like they're trying to commit fraud and it'll turn into a problem for them.

Not a super effective strategy maybe, but if they're targeting registered republicans there absolutely could be a percentage of people who'd get confused, not want to or know how to check into the situation, and simply decide they rather not bother.

I guess that would be the damning factor: if it was in any way targeted specifically at republicans.

Its rather simple when you think about it.

Trooning out when you are part of media/politics is a sure as fuck sign you are so single-mindedly obsessed with increasing your own power, prestige, and chances of promotion that you will mutilate your own body and fuck your life up forever in exchange for an extra edge against the competition and an extra bag of pretexts to sabotage and censure possible rivals and obstacles to increasing your own status.

With such utter contempt for their own lives when weighed against the barest chance of more power, just imagine how little they think of the lives of others.
