GTA San Andreas release 20 years ago today. - Your knee popped when you got out of your chair didnt it?

I used to love GTA SA. I remember watching tons of stunt videos and failing to recreating them. I still have it on my Xbox, I guess I should play it later.

20 years already? Time to celebrate with two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda

Admission time, I actually never finished this one. Oh believe me, I tried multiple times on my old PS2, but I just got tired out by the time the country chapter rolls around. San Fierro just did not interest me enough to keep going, there really is too much fapping about in this game. Worse yet, there is just too much side activities for my taste with little to no payoff. What was the point of the whole gang war mechanic if you get kicked out of Los Santos 1/3rd of a way thru? Same thing with your girlfriend there. They should have focused on less content but polished what's there instead of throwing the whole kitchen sink at the player, but then again maybe that's why people like this game. I'm more of a Vice City kind of guy.

It is weird that mechanic is near the start at the game for you to just lose it all after the betrayal; the mechanic does come back for the final portion of the game though.
I suppose it's intoduced so you know to be careful entering certain parts of the city, giving you the option to clear out enemy gangs in areas the player might frequent (like the neighbourhood with the Pay'n'Spray and Pizza Stack is always a priority for me); if you remember how hostile half of the map becomes toward the end of GTA3 after you've pissed off all the gangs in that game, I for one appreciate the option to create some non-hostile zones.
Also narrative purposes; CJ is essentially exiled from LS with the city becoming infested with hostile rival gangs in the second act making it dangerous for him (and the player) to return, with the third act being a triumphant comeback of CJ, Grove Street and ousting all the other gangs.

tbh I was never really a fan of san andreas. Something about it just never clicked for me. I really preferred vice city. Still haven't played 5 yet, though its been sitting in my steam library for years, mostly due to having pretty low ram on this pc. Though given I managed to get RD2 running well far below the recommended ram requirements I might give it a shot in the near future

Did the specs requirements changed for gta5? I played it with 4gb of ram, a Phenom IIx4 and a crappy 650gtx when it was launched on pc and it ran fine on 720p with medium settings

I'd say from a sense of scale, ambition, and general content it's the best.

Later games might do things better, like the dynamism and story of GTA IV and GTA V just flat out plays better, but as an overall package it's the best game (just takes a bit to get into if you're mostly used to modern games)

San Andreas is a masterclass in world design that's only rivaled by Red Dead 2, the story is well paced and still regularly referenced today, and the amount of content puts modern games to shame. There's entire minigames and systems I didn't even know about after my first playthrough.
This is what I think of when I think of San Andreas. They couldn't have gone further with the tech that they had at the time. No other gta game no matter how much is crammed in will ever top the amount that they got out of a ps2 with what it was. You can really just infinitely add to games nowadays its really not an issue when 1 HDD can have more space than the desktop that they used to have at the time. You got what you got on the disc when you bought it and that was it. Now it is nice to have DLC im not against it but you didn't have to compromise like you did on San Andreas. Ultimately it's the final form of a GTA game as it will always be the one that reached the furthest.

What pains me is that people's experiences of San Andreas would just be memes and the horrendous Definitive Edition.
San Andreas has so many mods for it that only the most docile nigger cattle straight from Bill Gates' GMO ranch would choose the Definitive Edition over the original. If there is one game that will make your average person look up what a torrent is, this might just be it.
Speaking of which, it's crazy how disrespectful R* has been towards the games that made it what it is. Once the mobile ports came out, every single later port on both PC and consoles, until the Definitive Edition, was just the mobile ports. Crazy to think that the original PC releases or the console releases are still the best options to play today, thank fuck I still hung on to mine.

Looking for the best place to get a og pc copy. Try to grab an original disk or are there good digital rips floating around? I have GTA 1-3 on cd and trying to resist adding SA and VC to the collection of a decent rip is out there.

My recommendation for San Andreas, the OG HOODLUM release, it's how I first got to play GTA:SA and it's what I'm using right now. Here's the infohash of it: ae16d214fa17153259047ef6cb055b5615aa737f

Unfortunately I don't have a straight answer for Vice City and III. The way I would do it would be getting a clean ISO from the Redump PC-Compatible Assembly, one copy of which is inaccessible on the Internet Archive and the other on Myrient, but that's a raw ISO of the retail disk, so if it required a CD key, or if it had SecuROM or anything like that, it's gonna have that as well.

I would then install it under a Windows XP VM, pull the game files out of the VM, get a cracked EXE from GameCopyWorld and assemble it all into a functioning game. That's my "clean room" old game installation method, very convoluted and autistic but it avoids any issues that could arise from such old installers being ran on modern Windows, and I pull out just what I need. I just might do it now to have a clean copy of the files myself, as well as to give one to others.

EDIT: Ight, I did as I said. Here are the clean game files. Note that the cracked EXE is in the crack\ directory, and you will still have to mod it per the MixMods Essentials lists (III/VC) to have a good experience. The bare minimum to get them running under Windows 10 is the crack and SilentPatch.

*sips white Monster* Yup... these were the days... I still remember passing around cheat codes in school or doing non-standard competitions around the game like who will survive the longest while being chased around by cops. Even though I haven't played the game in more than a decade I still remember what hesoyam, aezakmi, baguvix and uzumymw mean. I mean there's also fullclip or ohdude but those are actual words.

R1, R2, L1, R2, left, down, right, up, left, down, right, up is seared into my brain like it's my ssn. Had an entire sheet of paper filled about 3 quarters of the way down with cheats. Still have the BradyGames strategy guide that I would casually read when I went to use the bathroom.

*sips Mountain Dew* Yeeeup, eeghhhh. Those were the days indeed.

Thing is, after SA, R* had to effectively start from scratch. They now had to figure out how to effectively harness the power of the Xbox 360, which did bring unprecedented graphical fidelity, but that would come at a cost of how much content you could add to the game as you were developing the graphics, because you sure as hell didn't want to look like a PS2 game in this generation. Not only that, R* had to develop their own game engine after RenderWare was bought out by EA. This has led to GTA IV feeling like a major step backwards, even though it was far from it. Gamers have expected the same amount of content as they got in SA and then some, which led to a major disappointment, and a feeling of stagnation.

I beg to differ however, as to me, IV was a result of the Houser brothers wanting to make their dream game that was more grounded and restrained than what they've previously made. As they were figuring out which direction to take IV's story and design, they've ended up watching a whole bunch of Eastern European movies for inspiration, including Brat and Brat 2, legendary movies which have strongly influenced them in a myriad of ways. Chances are, if Sergey Bodrov was still with us, it would be him who would receive a proposition from R* to be the main role and not Vladimir Mashkov. If you play IV from the perspective of those movies rather than the perspective of San Andreas, it all really clicks together. IV compensated for the lack of content with the rich story and atmosphere, and for that alone it deserves the same spot on the podium as San Andreas. It wasn't a worse game, just a different one, equally as good.
This is pretty much it. People were expecting something much grander in scale (read: crazier things, beyond jetpacks - an action movie, something straight out of Saints Row). Yet once you appreciate GTA IV from its realism and and grittiness, and forget the glamour of Vice City and even the gangster outlook of life from San Andreas, you come out seeing an amazing thing. I will say: Sadly, due to hardware limitations, not getting the "Liberty State" was a true setback. I would have loved to see Niko and Roman travel among the Catskills and maybe even in the snowy Adirondacks. Regardless, the story is there, and we should be thankful for what we got. I remember seeing kids telling fake accounts saying "Niko sucked" compared to Tommy Vercetti.
By the time R* was getting around to making GTA V however, that's when the series truly stagnated. Under the pressure of the initial reception of IV, R* really wanted to make the next gen San Andreas people longed for, but they've decided to still make it for the current generation instead of waiting for the next one. In result, as R* tried to bridge IV's visual and technological prowess with SA's content density and gameplay, they've fell flat on both fronts. The attention to detail from IV was toned down, Euphoria physics were dumbed down, vehicle damage was dumbed down, and in the attempt to make the handling more like SA after the backlash of IV's slinky handling, they've overcorrected and made V's handling even less realistic than SA's.

Then GTA Online came around, Shark Cards were introduced and the rest is history, over a decade of nothing until T2's execs realized it's time to bring something fresh. By that time, the people who made GTA what it is have left the company, and frankly, anyone still hyped for GTA VI is either naive or stupid, and it just so happens that 99% of the GTA community is downright retarded. No matter how bad VI is going to be, people will fellate it endlessly just because it's GTA.
Well, I would add that GTA V suffers from what I would say that it's an inferiority complex from GTA SA, trying to be somewhat bigger, better and also its own thing. I can surely appreciate what it is. Then GTA Online came, and yep, rest is history. People will just buy GTA VI because it is GTA. If they had the old cast together, working on a multi city project and looking for something new, I'd love to see the northwest US (Washington State), as well as a return to London (yes, I know it's a parody of USA. Whatever, at least an intro or mission set in London or Greater London area would suffice).

I remember waiting for this game...
San Andreas is a fun game, great music, memorable missions. I still prefer vice city though.
Same.
LOL beat me to it, tho this gif is gonna get a ton of use now since fall 2004 was probably the best period in gaming in term of titles that made history being released together.

And its been all downhill since then...
Still haven't played 5 yet
Don't bother its a total letdown, or at least it was for me. Its the microtransactions that keep it alive because zoomers are retarded and like to pay for make-believe shit in a game that's closer in time to GTASA that it is to the present day.
