Culture "Non-diverse" films will no longer be eligible for a BAFTA

With the #OscarsSoWhite controversy on a low simmer until the Academy announces this year’s nominees on January 24, the British Academy of Film and Television Awards, otherwise known as BAFTA, have done something extraordinary in the effort to make prestigious films less glaringly white. Beginning in 2019, films will no longer be eligible for two big awards if they meet less than two of four new diversity criteria. Any films nominated for the Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer categories will have to show some significant effort to improve diversity in “onscreen characters and themes, senior roles and crew, industry training and career progression, and audience access and appeal to under-represented audiences.”

The BBC reports that these new rules correlate with the B.F.I.’s diversity standards, which were put in place to improve inclusivity in British films. The BAFTAs are focusing on “increasing the representation of under-represented groups in front of and behind the camera,” according to a statement released by the organization.

I can't stand shit like this. Diversity "laws" and requirements are terrible because they hinder creativity by upholding it to what is in fact a racist and politically oriented standard. Truly great movies will be forgotten or ignored not because of their stories, settings, or characters but because of the color of their character's skin and who they want to have sex with.

Directors, writers and producers are forced to shoehorn nearly unrealistically diverse casts of people into their works, taking away time they could be using to consider how to better improve their picture in ways that matter, all because they are required to assume that the general public is too bigoted or stupid to be able to relate to a character who is not the same color as them if they want to receive any sort of appreciation for their labor.

I understand wanting to be inclusive (to an extent), but diversity for the sake of diversity is the fucking worst. I absolutely loathe it.

Imagine if Casa Blanca, Citizen Cane or the original Star Wars trilogy were upheld to standards like this.
 
For the last goddamn time, no one gives a shit about "diversity" in movies or the fact that it may look like a bag of M&M's. Just make a good movie and people will come to watch it, regardless of the skin color or sex of the people in it.
 
I honestly believe that film, at least in the big studio, blockbuster move style of film, is obsolete, because of all the constraints the industry is getting handed. But you don't have to do any of that shit if you want to write a book, develop a game, or any other production on the internet. So I think that in the future we'll keep seeing more shit in the theaters but more noteworthy stuff in other mediums.
 
Oh. This thing. It's a pretty big nothingburger, for a couple reasons:

Firstly, it only applies to British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer categories. Pretty narrow piece of the slate.

Secondly, the BFI Diversity Standards that they crib from are pretty laughable. You have to meet 2 out of the 4 groups of "Standards" by nodding in the direction of underrepresented groups. Here's where it gets funny: not only do you have race, gender, disability, and sexual orientation as underrepresented groups in this schema, you have age and socio-economic status as indicators. If your movie has rich and poor people and has supposed themes on economic status, you qualify. If you hire somebody old or not affluent to hammer a goddamn nail on a piece of your set, you qualify (oh dear, I wonder where we could possibly find homosexual set designers and makeup artists, you think there are any?). Hell, if you have your movie going for matinee pricing at some point or you make it available through Netflix or a VOD service, you technically fucking qualify.

This isn't going to turn all British movies into the cast of Hamilton. It's going to make people creatively fill out one more fucking form when applying to be considered for nomination. A lot of British shit is already filling out this form anyway to get funding from BFI anyway, and the two categories it applies to are British-only films anyway.

Yay, the diversity crowd can pat themselves on the back while everybody else just keeps on keeping on as they have anyway. Good job!
 
About time. How can a movie truly convey the horrors of the Battle of the Somme if it doesn't have a pansexual quadriplegic Inuit and two lisping Indian badgerkin demiboys in it?
 

Good thing I'm not a dumb nazi or else I would start noticing patterns.
