UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I remember reading about that. The girl nicked her dad's hunting knife as I recall. Looking at the school's page and Twitter it seems like a top notch school but I can't see anywhere about it being a private one.

Point being I'm wondering if this is another case of Daddy's spoiled little psychopath having strings pulled for her. 🤔

He added: "With the greatest of possible reluctance, I will have to discharge this jury.

"[It is] profound and very unsatisfactory to discharge the jury, especially for the 14-year-old who will have to stand trial again."

That poor 14 year old. What a shame she has to stand trial for murder. Can't we just let her off?

You do remember that Shabana Mahmood has openly said she wants prisons closed for women because they aren't working for them?
Every joke is a Labour policy currently.

There are people who will look you dead in the eye and will tell you the only crime women ever commit is not paying their TV licence. When you point out how retarded that is they’ll tell you that men force women to do those crimes. The left is beyond retarded.

I've wanted to make this post for a few months now, but I keep thinking "nahh, it's just a one-off". Anyway.

How many 20 and 30 year old athletes are going to drop dead before someone really starts to question the vax? We've had two footballers in their 30s and today a 28 year old GB medium distance runner has croaked it.

It's not just me, right? You see that people are dying everyday on the BBC, most of the time it's young athletes, and stories about people in their 40s and 50s getting cancer? Surely it's not just me that's noooticing.

I think every member of the BBC has had cancer at some point by now. All of whom had the clot shot.

I think a lot of the athletes ( and retired athletes ) are dropping down dead because of steroids or whatever other performance enhancing stimulants ( HGH, SARMs, creatine, etc ) they are / were on.
The next 10 to 20 years are going to be interesting in that respect. Whilst the use of performance enhancing drugs ( be that sportsmen, bouncers and hardmen, or bodybuilders and posers ) is not how it once was ( Arnie was basically using stuff for farm animals in the 70's, whereas now they are synthesized for human use ) the amount of people using them is an iceburg ( far more are using them than the general public realise ) and the long term consequences are unkown.
The fact that Arnie has had how many heart surgeries due to a "genetic heart condition" ?! If you want a really good example, how many wrestlers die young ? It seems their life expectancy is around mid to late 30s. Do you count the suicides and unexplained deaths in your reckoning due to mood alteration ?
How would taking these drugs react with the great Vax of a few years back ? The long term effects of all these things are largely unknown. I think a lot of people believe that these drugs are safe, and they may well be for immediate use, but nobody really knows what the impact will be 10, 20 or even 30 years down the road.
It's normally only the regular to mid level sports people that drop down dead. The guys at the top end are probably on stuff designed specifically for their bodies and can afford to have a doctor check them over every six months. For every Arnie, Stallone, Rock there are a thousand guys that didn't get the multi-million dollar film career, but did get all the side effects and can't afford to get them checked out and monitored all the time.
Certainly I think the number of athletes going on to develop cancer and heart problems in their 40s and 50s in the coming years will give an indication of how widespread doping was since 2000.

Will you accept "well-intentioned"? Because I can probably scrounge up a name or two if you're willing to meet me half-way.
Yes, I’ll take ‘not actively evil and does their best.’ Either side of the aisle. Rory Stewart maybe? Someone will now tell me he bbqs cats or something. Alastair darling maybe.

I’ve weirdly heard lots of nice things about Jacob Rees-Mogg. He’s meant to be a decent human being when the cameras are off.

Double post but I’ve never heard a bad word about Lord Robertson.

Alan Simpson was a Labour MP for Nottingham who seemed a decent fellow. But he quit because he said he could do more good not as an MP and outside the system, than he could do as an MP inside. Which is disheartening. Kemi Badenoch seems sincere and is competent to boot. Hopefully I don't find out anything that will disillusion me. Probably need to look to younger ones that aren't (yet) career politicians.

The reality is that few people can actually measure up to a fictional ideal hero. But if someone is sincere and trying to help they get credit from me. I think there's a selection bias. Most people who are competent and honest end up just going into regular productive work. Which has the unfortunate effect of leaving administrative jobs to those who "have the time".

Rory Stewart was actually my pick for Tory leader back in the day but he didn't make it and I don't know his career well enough to say confidently he's a "good" person. I'm sure they exist. I actually think more people are decent people at heart than otherwise. But if you want good politicians you need an ethical and informed electorate that rewards good behaviour and punishes bad. And there are forces that work against that as you well know.

Yeah, he's very patrician in what is currently a very archaic way, which ironically means that unlike so many others in the UK's upper classes he believes that his status has obligations he needs to follow and not just unearned privileges. He's very much a gentleman, complete with all the baggage that goes along with that title.

I think he's also a religious person who thinks religion should make you nice.
