Im fortunate enough that my home took only minor damage. I can't say the same for a lot of people in my area.

There's a lot of survivors who are isolated and stranded in the mountains. I saw some people getting pissed that rescuers are "turning away" pilots to get to these areas. But what's happening is that these pilots, even if they have the best intentions, are making liabilities of themselves. Because people are being told not to trust FEMA, they're taking it upon themselves to be the hero. Instead they're putting themselves in danger.

I saw a clip of a black helicopter flying low enough to scatter and fuck up supplies. My theory is that it's some numbskull who maybe wanted to help, tried to find a place to land, realized that they couldn't, so they just fucked it up for everyone.

Eta: Helene has also caused mudslides that wiped out homes and roads. People aren't just dealing with the aftermath of one natural disaster.

I spoke to my family members in western NC. They are all fine and actually live in areas that sustained little or no damage; life is fairly back to normal for them except for the fact that they can’t travel too far out of the area because of the damaged roads. They have seen military and FEMA presence where they live, but it’s more because their area is being used as a staging area rather than them needing the resources themselves. The media always shows the worst in a natural disaster, which can give people the mistaken impression that everything on the ground is anarchy.

Similar things happened at the end of Hurricane Harvey, which hit Houston really hard. There is a huge black population in Houston, including many people who were displaced after Hurricane Katrina. After the hurricane hit, far-right radical militia groups online spread rumors that the niggers were rioting all over the area, and sure enough, the Meal Team militiamen started streaming in, weapons in tow, to start shooting them in the name of defense. Of course it was all fake, but it only aggravated the situation on the ground.

There’s also a huge amount of misrepresentation about exactly what FEMA does. FEMA’s main role is in managing resources - basically, infrastructure. They do not disperse meals on streetcorners, but they do manage the people that do. They triage: they get cell phone signals up again, make sure the hospitals are up and running, coordinate search and rescue teams, bring in linemen to restore the power, create checkpoints to keep out grifters, including those militiamen. Unfortunately, for as many people as want to help, there are others who go into disaster zones for nefarious reasons. Most of the actual clean-up work is done by locals and volunteers. FEMA doesn’t cut you a check for your destroyed house, but they do give you a bit of money (it’s more now, it was only $500 under Trump) and make sure you have a hotel room to stay in if there’s one available while you file insurance claims. But the rebuilding process takes months, if not years, and a lot of people who are native to the area will never return. Their properties will be bought out by wealthier people and developers.

The funniest shit about this hurricane machine is that somehow this powerful device was hidden from the president because Trump could've used it too. But I guess those deep state demon rats made sure to build it after he left.

I can't help but notice Trump's sad numbers on the platform. I've never caught him with 5 digits viewers, it always oscillates between 4 or 9 thousand, really fucking SAD.

as someone who’s had a career in sales for over two decades, it’s wild to me people think he’s a good negotiator when the man cannot shut up for the life of him. Silence is super powerful in negotiation tactics, do you think Trump has ever let a second of silence go unfilled?
