Any theories on what the long term solution is? Automation isn't going away, so what the plan for all the people out of work? I'm leaning toward everyone have shares of these companies and making money that way, with limited work for a short portion of the year.

I've thought a lot about this, and I have some theories, but none of them feel workable to me. One would be to license the usage of automation for businesses above a certain size, and recirculate that money into essential services and reduce the burden of the cost of living on people. But I know we can't trust government to do a good job of this. Instead of taxing their corporate paymasters making money from this "revolution" the burden will be on the middle class. Every solution I come up with feels like socialism by another name and that makes me uncomfortable. But I genuinely can't come up with anything. Automating requires a big initial cost that small businesses will never be able to shoulder to compete. So small businesses will continue to collapse, as they've been doing for years. Centralising money in the hands of those who can afford the buy in.

I hate everyone in this. The ILA is corrupt as fuck, the 20% of the union that actually does work I do support but I think the pay increases of 50% are fucking insane, but most of that is just money that is going to be funneled into corrupt union bureaucracy.

I have mixed feelings about the automation in that, in an ideal world where Union Leadership actually cared about the industry and the worlders and not simply being profiteering extractive niggers, the Union would allow tests of automation that would allow for things like increasing the speed of ship unloading even if personnel targets were set. And if an automation project was horseshit, they would be able to kill it. But trying to kill all innovation isn't going to be good for anyone.

Overall a big win. It’s a fact that our inability to produce goods has negatively impacted our productivity and our ability to defend ourselves. It’s also a fact that increased imports have benefitted many urban and specifically coastal communities. But it came at a cost to the fly over states and to our overall interests. Personally I wish we exported more than we currently do which would still benefit those working at ports.

Good luck keeping those machines babysat when they get more and more complex and you need more education/training to keep them running. If you offer of pay and benefits isn't being accepted, that's a sign by the market that you aren't offering enough for the work you want done. Businesses that offer competitive pay will always out compete those that don't.
