Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining

Last month, Statcounter reported a notable decrease in Windows 11's market share, and the trend continued in April 2024. After reaching its all-time high of 28.16% in February 2024, Windows 11 plummeted below the 26% mark.

According to Statcounter, in April 2024, Windows 11 lost 0.97 points, going down from 26.68% to 25.65%. All those users seemingly went for Windows 10 since the OS, which will soon turn nine, crossed the 70% mark for the first time since September 2023, gaining 0.96 points.

It is interesting to see Windows 11 losing quite a significant chunk of users in the middle of its cycle. Even Windows 8 and 8.1, universally considered not great versions of Windows, only went down after the release of their successors. True, Statcounter is not 100% accurate in its estimates, but an almost 3-point decline for a product with over 1 billion devices is too big to dismiss.

Some argue that Windows 11 still offers little to no benefits for upgrading, especially in light of Microsoft killing some of the system's unique features, such as Windows Subsystem for Android. Add to that the ever-increasing number of ads, some of which are quite shameless, and you get an operating system that has a hard time winning hearts and minds and retaining its customers.

Later this month, Microsoft will showcase new AI features for Windows 11, which could become the first solid reason to leave Windows 10 behind. However, rumors indicate some of the most exciting parts will not be available on existing hardware. Therefore, customers who do not plan to upgrade their PCs simply have no reason to stay with Windows 11.

As for Windows 7, despite the no-support state and the continuous developer support exodus, it is still alive and kicking. Statcounter says about 3% (-0.04 points) of all Windows PCs are still powered by Windows 7, which was fully discontinued in January 2023. Some developers still release updates for Windows 7, but most mainstream apps and browsers ditched the old OS many months ago.

I have stutters on Windows 11 for a system capable of running Elden Ring at 4K maxed out, I sort of fixed it by going to the graphics and setting it to high performance but some still remained

I don't have those stutters at all in Windows 10 on the same PC, even after I debloated Windows 11 I still had issues with stutter and some software compatibility

Windows 11's design interface is completely made for retards who cannot manage to work a file directory at all, I wouldn't call it bad because it serves its purpose in being an oversimplified GUI for retards who can hardly operate a computer

This is how you destroy a software company. Never do this unless your current product is already dead (e.g. Apple and OS9 -> OSX). When you have a product with decades of continuous development behind it, merely reaching feature parity with the new product will take, well, decades.

You have to do what Microsoft did to retire 9x with NT (all Windows since XP is NT-based, not 9x-based). You develop a new product for a new market, then keep the old one alive via maintenance-style development as you migrate more and more of your old market to the new product.

And all the current user-facing problems of Windows with maybe the exception of high resource utilization are completely separate from the legacy support and deadweight they carry around. There's nothing about XP compatibility in Windows 11 that requires them to put ads in the fucking operating system, there's nothing about browser compatibility that requires them to turn the preinstalled solutions into self perpetuating malware-adjacent unkillables, and there's nothing about the file management structure that requires them to bully people into cloning all their shit into onedrive for corporate scanning.

Windows 12 does not need the software to be rebuilt from the ground up. Windows 12 needs the Leadership team to be hung from the campus lampposts so it can be rebuild from the ground up. They already don't really make money from the OS consumer segment directly, its all business licensing, server services and the like. They're burning goodwill and consumer engagement to get the corporate equivalent of "We're still losing money, but a couple pennies less". And that is anathema to what they want/need, which is consumers voluntarily using windows as much as possible to maintain software space dominance, to force business to keep using it because its cheaper than trying to retrain the average workforce to use an alternative - Imagine trying to teach HR how to use the linux command line these days.

If they just ripped out the live service shit (Or at least the mandates, if you like having a microsoft account and onedrive then go ahead), stopped sealing poweruser control behind impenetrable walls, and just focused on the regular internal upgrades to keep with the times, Windows 12 would go over just fine. I'm not even asking them to cure the bloat, I'm keeping it realistic here.

That's not really the factor - your Windows OEM license for building your own rig is about $100usd if you buy it from a parts store, and you buy it every say, four or five years as you eventually are forced to jump into the next version of the OS. System integrators making $400 laptops get it insanely cheap, literally in the dollars per license range, biggers ones like Dell are probably paying even less. Meanwhile, if you're running a Windows office at work with microsoft services, you're looking at a couple hundred dollars per license for every windows machine you want to deploy, plus $40-$120/month/user depending on the rest of the microsoft software your use case requires. And that's not even including other costs like the per-user Azure AD, or the cost of the windows servers you're quite probably running at this point, likely in Azure as well so throw cloud costs in.

Similarly, gaming isn't actually as big of a section as you might think.

All of Windows and Xbox make up 20% of the entire revenue space, and windows has been a perpetually, if slowly, declining share. The majority of the gaming space revenue is purely software (Xbox takes a 30% cut of digital sales), with the actual console hardware being a minority revenue generator. Its also worth noting that both microsoft and analysist consider xbox to be the only consumer facing business segment. In every other segment, the main driver of revenue is business to business, with direct to consumer being an afterthought. Even in the OS Sales, OEM's buying licenses at a fraction of the consumer facing costs is still the majority of all Windows OS Revenues. Techheads buying an OEM stick to put an OS on his new gaming PC is going to be a practically inperceptible drop in the bucket.

This is also why Microsoft really doesn't seem to try or care that much. While not outright hostile, we're really not worth much to them. If by some miracle of technological competence, 25% of steams ~150 million monthly users decided to swap to Valves Proton Linux stuff, that'd be marginal hit against the roughly one and a half billion windows OS's running around the world. And realistically, most of them would still have to VM or DualBoot Windows for stuff that compatibility layers just can't deal with for them.

I'm not a Linux expert by a long shot. I'm assuming your computer is pretty much a gaming + internet machine (that's how my main is) then just install Linux mint, steam and learn some absolute basics of how to keep your system up to dare. It's that simple, honestly.

the problem is Microsoft probably has an entire playbook from the 90s they'd break out if any company even dared to try it. plus there's probably a hilarious amount of exclusivity agreements too. a PC that you can't game on because Microsoft won't let people use direct X. which would take out enough people "techy" enough to care about or want to switch operating systems.

then there's every piece of media that would gladly accept money to make shit up about whomever is releasing such a product. Even beyond all of that, i'm sure the cost to make a good operating system at this point is so fucking much that you'll never get that money back.

The fact that no one's really tried in so long means it has to be a bad idea. Every decade there's another push for MAPs but the idea of making a knock off of Windows xp with the security of windows 7 is too outside the box for most people.

Basically it encourages both a skill lock-in and a developer lock-in. Everyone just learns to use windows because everything is on windows - There's exceedingly little software that only has a Mac version, but the opposite is very common, windows only is pretty normal. Few consumers are interested in spending the time to learn to use Mac or Linux, and spending the time to find alternatives to all their shit that doesn't work on those platforms, so developers basically have to come to windows with compatible versions of their software. So you rarely even end up with a good incentive to leave at the end of the day.

But Microsoft again doesn't consider most of their verticals to be direct to consumer. They don't actually care that much about windows operating systems being a household name - Xbox being the brand exception, and you can see it in their marketing all the time. They're here for business to business, so where does basically free windows OS for consumers come into business to business?

Training. That skill lock-in I mentioned earlier.

Every business out there can more or less take it as a given that they can hand a new hire a windows laptop, and they will have some minimal level of computer literacy specific to windows. Often, they'll expect better than minimum, you'll need to know how to store and organize your files in a windows file explorer, sync stuff to the corporate onedrive/gcloud, and off you go. So you have employees who are basically guaranteed to know how to use the OS, and you have developers who are basically guaranteed to be making software compatible with the OS, its a no-brainer for the business world. Linux is only business relevant in the server world these days, where regular users rarely tread, and Mac only really exists in some video production and graphics production studios, and I guarantee you that the bean counters there are still on windows.

For what its worth, the progressive march of everything just becoming a browser web app is threatening some of this lock-in, but I'm not convinced it'll be enough on its own to kill the inertia. Consumers don't want to learn to use their computers, so if everything goes web, then they still don't have incentive to learn how to use Linux or a Mac.

tbh for a lot of people we've been there for a while, if you ever had to deal with normies there's really not much difference what it's running on or what even the name is. I'm talking about people that use "the internet" by clicking on the icon called "internet" that looks a certain way. try to explain to them what a browser is and you see their eyes glaze over. same for office, maybe word/excel (but a lot of them are fine with google docs, so there's that). their "work app" is more and more browser based, so you don't even have to bother with native versions or OS support (unless you use something specialized like CAD).

this even goes so far that MS is actively working against that lock in - when the ribbon appeared in office, you have quite a lot of normies throw a fit. windows looking different now after the update (otherwise you wouldn't know it's a new version, right?), same effect. theming is non-existent and MS has been cutting down on customization to the point not even classic is available anymore (unless windows fucks up and you can see it's basically all just re-themed classic). hope you enjoy the support calls for several days in a row after a migration about "what's wrong with the computer, why it looks different and the thing they clicked before isn't there anymore (thanks to MS constantly fucking with the start menu)".

Yes and no. What got Micro$haft into trouble was forcing people into using Outlook browser and be locked into it and they got caught

But software for the Windows system was so damn cheap. up to 50% or more than what you got when using Apple.

This was a no brainer. Cheap OS that was as almost as good as the Mac OS at the time. Cheap Business Suites. Cheap Desktop Publishing software and a computer you can build yourself that had MORE firepower than what Apple offered at the time... Yea of course I'm going to save several thousand dollars in the long run.
