Waymo Robotaxis Keep Waking Up Neighbors With 4 AM Honking Spree - Every night, a fleet of self-driving taxis beep at each other while trying to park themselves in a San Francisco lot.

Waymo

On June 25, Waymo opened its robotaxis’ doors to anyone in San Francisco. Previously, Waymo’s funny-looking, self-driving Jaguar I-Paces were only available to people on a waitlist. But now anyone in San Francisco can download the app and hail their own robotic chauffeur. Even though it’s only been a couple of months, the now-widely available Waymo cars are aggravating the neighbors by beeping incessantly at four o’clock in the morning.

In between rides, many Waymo taxis return to the same parking lot to “rest,” while they wait to be hailed yet again. That parking lot sits between several apartment buildings and the taxis will beep at each other throughout the night, keeping the neighbors awake. “The cars are robotic and they’re honking at each other, and there’s no one in the cars when it’s happening,” Chris Cherry, a San Francisco resident, told NBC Bay Area.

Since the robotaxis park themselves in the parking lot, they need to find open spaces. Sometimes, while trying to autonomously navigate lots, they might get close to bumping into other parked Waymos, which will then send off warning honks when the parking Waymo gets too close, just like a human would if someone is about to back into their car. But because the parking lot is filled with dozens of Waymos running all night, that happens a lot.

According to the neighbors, the two times throughout the day when Waymos honk the most are around rush hour and 4 a.m. The former is likely due to the frequent usage, but the latter is an odd time. Maybe that’s when the tired little robotaxis retire for the night. I don’t think the neighbors care why, as the constant beeping keeps them awake.

“We love having them there, we just would like for them to stop honking their horn at four in the morning repeatedly,” said Cherry.

Fortunately, Waymo knows of the problem and is working on a fix. “We are aware that in some scenarios our vehicles may briefly honk while navigating our parking lots.” a Waymo spokesperson told NBC. “We have identified the cause and are in the process of implementing a fix.”

As annoying as it is for neighbors of the Waymo-filled lot, it’s undeniably funny watching the silly robot cars beep at each other. Even with the most advanced autonomous hardware and software in the world, they still act like a bunch of typical city drivers, honking at each other to complain about their crappy parking.

They have a distinct look. They’re the Waymo Car more than they are a Jaguar I-Pace.

They’re fine. I rode in one last month. It’s pricy to take one, but it beats sitting in an Uber if you’re only trying to go a few miles down the road.

I mean I guess every car is a temperamental electronics-laden POS these days and west coast Apple worshiping figs are suckers for 'luxury' but Jags are notoriously pricey and unreliable. It would be like building a fleet out of BMWs but at least those are German and some Bavarian autist is actually trying to design something great (even if it turns out to be an over-designed POS).

Jags have this history of being luxury cars for brits and suckers, they used to be bespoke but unreliable and expensive (again British) and then Ford bought them and they were still unreliable and expensive (but no longer bespoke) and now Tata owns them.

I hope they got one hell of a deal because couldn't even imagine a worse fleet car (well as long as we exclude Fiat).

My dads friend sold me an old one. I had it for about a year in the late 90s. It gave me car electronics PTSD. But I only paid $1000 for it, and sold it for $2500, so it all worked out in the end. That said, I actually did like driving it.

This is what I mean! I'm sure the new ones are just shitty Indian mass produced cars in their own right but even the luxury brand they are leaning on has this rep for being horrible cars to keep on the road.... and you don't even get to drive it! The robot drives it! It's just one of those things I never thought I would see in my lifetime. Jaguar fleet vehicles. It's right up there with Ferrari SUV. What's next a McLaren diesel bus?... although I guess Lambo started out making tractors (and still do.. err well Audi does and then puts Lambo badges on them).

Ps. Nice flip :P

Bought me my first truck, a Ranger, that I still have, and will have until its a shattered, rusting hulk, or my death, whichever comes first.

I had a beige Taurus, there were literally so many on the road in the 90's it just felt so, so boring, so mom car. I was going to buy my Dad's stick Ranger off him and learned to drive it but it was so fucking slow that I went and bought something else (long story) ... Turns out the Ranger was down two cylinders from bad coils and my father only found out while selling it. I would still like a 4 banger 90's ford ranger to go get fire wood and mulch.

Oh God. Everyone had that damned beige taurus. I have a friend who still has his. I had to rescue him and his family from downstate and haul it home for him in March, but with my 250, the ranger is too old and small for that.

My Ranger is the V6, and I've spent more than I should have to keep it up, but its a sentimental thing. Some things, you don't just throw away. I did some work for a friend who does bodywork and paint when he bought his house, and hopefully I'm gonna get the old girl shiny as new again next year, but since he's doing it free, I have to wait until he has time and space in his shop. I only use it to haul my small toy trailer, anymore, just because I don't want to stress the old thing.

Okay but the real question is...

Why in the fuck would anyone build a fleet of fucking Jaguars? If you want a bunch of new cars that are going to be worthless in 2 years you just go Nissan like every other rental company, instead of spending god knows how much on Jags!
Some cars are easier to modify for self driving than others and this is an explicit partnership between JLR and Waymo, I'd imagine the latter was essentially granted all access and likely even an avenue for straight up engineering input so the former can mooch off Waymo R&D in their driver assistance systems. Also back in 2017-18, the electric car landscape was a lot narrower and the I-Pace was one of the first premium "taxi-sized" battery electric vehicles that wasn't a Tesla.

Those Vulcan V6 Rangers make no power and guzzle gas, but they go and go and go and go forever.

Mine is 22 years old now and doesn't throw so much as a single error code - I just desperately need to get the rusted-out shackles and hangers replaced.

Yeah, that's also why I don't drive it much, and Illinois winters being the bitch they are, it stays garaged a lot. I have to have the 250 for work, so I'm stuck on that one, but my buzzing around doing errands ride is my Scion, which is nice and lean on the fuel. Don't look at me like that, My granddad left it to me, and he got it because he (mistakenly, but I don't mind at all) thought I would think it was cool. Bless ya, gramps. That little Scion has really grown on me, too.

Libtards tore out their hair during the Trucker protest and it rattled Trudeau to the point he made Canada extra tyrannical on those dastardly truckers it still ended the Coof craze and now the robots are doing it in Globohomo central, San Francisco. Delicious irony.

This shit is exactly why they can't have their dystopia. If their imports don't strip the tech down to components to sell, their robots will inconvenience them to the point of madness.

Its what they deserve for gutting Tay.

You're right, a true sign of intelligence is keeping track of who sucks dick on a shit posting website like you do for some reason 🤔

Some people pick up details, even details they would rather not. Some people are too busy chugging pole to notice anything. C'est la vie.

Don't troll the West Coaster over his native customs too hard, I still have so many questions about how these things work.... What prevents "lunchtime roudies" from vandalizing and tagging up the interior? are they all fucked up with wear and tear, is it a bait and switch with the nice badge but inside they are cab interiors? If a crack head with a stolen cell phone wants to order a porta-john to smoke crack in does it just go to it's next pickup afterwards?

Would these things even survive 15 minutes in Philadelphia?

Ps. Impressive. I mean sometimes little things stick with me but mostly I remember avatars and general alignments... as well as the crazies of course.

So up until the end of June you had to have an invite code & there was a wait list to use the service. In July they opened it up to anyone in SF. It's a little more expensive than an Uber & it also doesn't go to the East Bay aka Oakland both of those barriers will control the rowdies. To be seen if the cars get more damaged now that it's open to the public.

The inside is currently nice leather seats, I imagine as they scale it , it will be more like a cab.

There's cameras inside the car. I don't think someone is monitoring it 24/7 but from what I understand a real person somewhere looks at the start & end of the ride to make sure nothing is a miss.
