Thank you for mentioning this. I help take care of 3 wobbly kitties. People need to think of it as being similar to kitty cerebral palsy. It is strictly a disorder that effects orientation, balance, gait, movement, and limb coordination. It has absolutely no impact on their intelligence. They are not "mentally retarded" in any way. They also have no idea they are special. Being born this way, this is all they know. They don't see themselves as different. They are just as smart and loving as any other cat, they just have trouble with certain motor functions.
One thing in particular to know is that while the underlying disorder will never get better, they can learn how to deal with it. One of the 3 I help take care of is considered moderate to severely impaired. At 8 weeks of age she had never walked. She flipped and flopped her body side to side to get around. As she grew, she got stronger, she learned how to help deal with her balance and coordination issues. She learned how to use her nails on surface like carpet to help anchor each of her steps so she could stand upright. By 5 months of age, she was walking. By 8 months of age she was able to walk the entire length of a typical house in 15 minutes. She eats and drinks like a normal cat, she loves to play like any other cat, and she uses her litterbox faithfully like any other cat. The more you love and encourage them, the more you work with them to help them build strength and understand how to compensate, the more they will be able to do.
Please, please, strongly consider giving one of these kitties a home if you are looking for a cat. People don't tend to adopt them because they don't understand the condition. They don't understand that their symptoms almost always improve as they grow. They just see them as disabled and a problem or hassle. Many of them get euthanized, even as kittens, because no one wants to give them a home. I can't implore you more strongly than to give a wobbly kitty a home. This is something I am very, very passionate about.
If you have absolutely any questions about wobbly kitties, I can almost guarantee that I can answer them. Please ask.
Also, for anyone that is anti-vaccination, this is a disorder that only happens if the mother cat gets infected with feline distemper while she is carrying the kittens. This is an infectious disease that a cat can be vaccinated against. People that own cats that aren't vaccinated can act as vectors for transmission to pregnant cats, and then her kittens will be injured. Please, please, vaccinate your cats against distemper.
I hear wobbly cats really like to be held so that their heads and upper bodies feel supported, like a human hugbox for kittycat
This is true. The wobbly kitty I mentioned above loves to be wrapped in a fleece and held. She relaxes, and purrs. It's one of her favorite things to do.
