Artefacts are those squiggly things in low-quality images. There are two types of files; lossy and lossless. Lossy files, when you save them, discard bits of "unimportant" information to save on file size, while lossless ones don't. When they discard that data, they have to fill in something to show the whole file, and that's where you get compression artefacts. If you've ever seen a pic or heard audio that sounds low quality, it's because you're noticing the compression.

JPGs are one of the most common filetypes because they're small files and basically any device/program can interact with them. They're also lossy, so the more people save and reupload JPGs, the more artefacts they get. Deep fried images are the result of doing that over and over to exaggerate the artefacts. Typically they're harder to spot in complex images like photos, but in simple graphics like that tree they're pretty obvious. I zoomed in on part of it, you can see the artefacts really easily:

If that tree had been a PNG, which is a lossless file type, it wouldn't have those squiggles and blurriness. You'd be able to save and post it over and over and it'd look the same. Thank you! That makes sense, and that is certainly something I've observed. But I did not know the "artefact" term (helpful! TY) or that using a jpg/seeing the loss would suggest that the person didn't create it. I'm not ackshually a boomer, but choosing file type for a SM post is not something I know like my abcs (and I, personally, do better understanding the why for it to burrow into my brain so again ty). Put another way, if I actually had created an image, not sure I'd know which format to upload to my theoretical site, beyond what format looks best.

• JPGs have small file sizes (fast loading!) but lose quality easily
• PNGs are bigger (slow loading) but always stay the same quality. They also support transparency!
• SVGs are lossless AND they're vector, which means instead of pixels the image is made of filled curves. They're huge files, but they're infinitely scalable (you can make them any size and not lose quality!) Plus they support transparency too.
• GIFs can be static (still) or animated, and support transparency, but they're limited to 256 colors. They're better for small animated images, like gliter gifs and emojis.
• WEBP is some new bullshit Google made that nobody likes. They technically combine the best of JPGs and PNGs, but most programs can't do anything with them so it's a pain in the ass to use a Webp for anything.

Most people just use JPG for everything and it suits them fine. If the extent of web stuff you do is posting vacation pics on facebook or whatever, then you don't really need to futz with it. If you start doing graphic design, then you might wanna do more research into PNGs and SVGs lol.

She's far from the first person to call herself an "eclectic pagan", I used to know another woman online who claimed similar beliefs - a mix of Celtic, Hindu and Egyptian gods (this was shortly before the rise of social justice Tumblr and the cultural appropriation police) and figures from Arthurian legend IIRC, though mostly Celtic (because she was also into the "ancestral beliefs" and fixated on her Irish/Scottish ancestry despite being American as apple pie), and had gotten so into the LARP she'd changed her name from something common like "Jennifer Susan Smith" to "Fionnuala Morgaine Smith" (not the exact names but you get the gist) and her kids' names followed the same theme. She'd gotten her husband on board too and they all did "magick" and rituals as a family, she was into the woo homebirth/homeschooling too.
