Scientists Use Nanoparticles to Remote Control Brains of Mice​

They could control their appetite, friendliness, and even maternal behaviors.​

Scientists at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in South Korea have developed a new way to control the minds of mice by manipulating nanoparticle-activated "switches" inside their brains with an external magnetic field.

The system, dubbed Nano-MIND (Magnetogenetic Interface for NeuroDynamics), works by controlling targeted regions of the brain by activating neural circuits.

While it's not the first "mind control" experiment involving animals, previous approaches have conventionally relied on invasive surgery and bulky external systems that limit the movement of test subjects, as Science Alert points out.

"This is the world's first technology to freely control specific brain regions using magnetic fields," said Jinwoo Cheon, director of the IBS Center for Nanomedicine, and senior author of a new paper published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology, in a statement about the research.

"We expect it to be widely used in research to understand brain functions, sophisticated artificial neural networks, two-way [brain-computer interface] technologies, and new treatments for neurological disorders," he added.

In experiments, the researchers activated inhibitory neurons within specific areas of the brain to increase appetite and feeding behaviors by 100 percent. By exciting these neurons, the team could conversely reduce the food the mice ate by 50 percent.

They also used the system to selectively activate receptors responsible for maternal behaviors in the brains of female mice that hadn't reproduced. By activating these pathways, the mice "significantly increased nurturing behaviors, such as bringing pups to their nest, similar to maternal mice," according to a press release.

In a third experiment, the researchers managed to activate brain regions responsible for boosting "friendly" behaviors, encouraging mice to get along with other mice in a small chamber they had never met before.

The scientists manipulated the neurons by magnetically twisting a tiny actuator to pull or push nanoparticles implanted in the mice's brains.

The research could lay the groundwork for novel nanotechnology-based treatments for neurological conditions in humans. It might even help to treat depression.

While long-term, chronic brain stimulation is critical for modeling behaviors and diseases, current methods show challenges due to the physical tethers and thereby restriction in animal behaviors 42 11 . We applied long12 term neuromodulation using MMG in the complex syndrome of obesity to interrogate the effects of prolonged 13 modulation of mice feeding behaviors. Vgat- or Vglut2-Cre mice were maintained in an 8-week high-fat diet 14 (HFD) to generate a mouse model of diet-induced obesity (DIO) and allowed for Cre-dependent Piezo1 15 expression to create either Vglut2-Piezo1 or Vgat-Piezo1 lines (Fig. 3a). After m-Torquer delivery at week 11, 16 the mice were treated with daily 1 hr MMG stimulation in a magnetic arena with access to food for 2 weeks, 17 and their body weight and food intake were monitored (Fig. 3a). In the case of HFD Vglut2-Piezo1 mice, after 18 the session, the results showed substantial weight loss and alleviation of obesity, while controls did not (Fig. 19 3b, c). Gradual weight reductions on a daily basis were observed (Fig. 3c), resulting in a significant body20 weight reduction by ~4.3 g on average (from 49.2 g on day 1 to 44.9 g on day 10), which is equivalent to 10% 21 body weight loss, while the control groups without m-Torquers, Piezo1, or both maintained obesity albeit 22 MMG stimulation (Fig. 3d). The total amount of food intake was also significantly decreased in MMG 23 stimulated Vglut2 mice (by 25.2 g) compared to the control groups without m-Torquers (50.8 g), Piezo1 (48.2 24 g), and both (53.5 g) (Extended Data Fig. 6a). Anatomical examinations showed reduced body fat: the sizes 25 of inguinal and gonadal white adipose tissue (iWAT and gWAT) were reduced compared to the control groups 26 (by 47% and 21% for iWAT and gWAT, respectively) (Fig. 3e, Extended Data Fig. 6c). 27

In the case of HFD Vgat-Piezo1 mice, on the contrary, substantial weight gains and aggravation of obesity 28 were observed after two weeks of stimulation (Fig. 3f, g). Body weight was increased by 7.5 g on average 29 (from 39.2 g on day 1 to 46.8 g on day 10), being equivalent to 18% body weight gain compared to the controls 30 (Fig. 3g, h). Total food intake was also increased considerably (40 g), compared to control groups without m31 Torquer (25.4 g), Piezo1 (25.1 g), and both (27.4 g) (Extended Data Fig. 6b), and both iWAT and gWAT were 32 noticeably enlarged compared to the control groups (120% and 61% enlargement, respectively) (Fig. 3i, 33 Extended Data Fig. 6d). Histological analysis showed negligible expressions of GFAP and Iba1 (markers for 34 astrocytes and microglia) and a normal level of NeuN (a marker for neurons), and quantitative ELISA assays 35 showed negligible expressions TNF𝛼 and IL1β (inflammatory cytokines) (Extended Data Fig. 7a-c, 36 Supplementary Fig. 9). These results suggest that long-term MMG stimulation did not induce any 37 cytotoxicity or inflammatory responses. Overall, these results show that long-term, neuron-specific 38 neuromodulation is possible by MMG, controlling the animal behaviors bidirectionally, while allowing 39 animals to behave freely without implanted devices otherwise needed in opto- and electro-genetics.

There's even more. One of the "related articles" links from the paywalled version of that article published in Nature was another article from a few years back from the same author that described the test setup, which was also paywalled. However, I was able to find it on Sci-hub.


The 500-nanometer nanoparticles used for this experiment are a unique variety called "m-torquers", which rotate like little compasses to face magnetic fields, applying a stimulus to the mouse's brain when electromagnets at the edge of the experimental apparatus are turned on and off. The maximum effective range, in this case, is as far as the magnetic fields can reach, or 70 centimeters (about 2.3 feet).

Being a meat computer running on electrical impulses shouldn't mean there's no free will. These people always kinda make me laugh because they take this fatalistic stance about how nothing matters and how free will doesn't exist, somehow using their supposed lack of free will to make blatantly free-will their decisions and plans to prove how free will isn't real.
