Frege gave the analogy of patriotism to that of how family feel to each other. People don't choose the family they are born in, nor do they choose the country they were born in, yet when it comes to both, it is natural to feel attachment, that you feel them to be the best. People easily can rationally see that their children, siblings, etc are not the best in the world, and have many faults and flaws that greatly annoy them, but ultimately nobody finds it odd that people will say that their family members are the best in the world. So too is it with countries. And by the same token, people would find it greatly dysfunctional for both of these relations to be filled with nothing but genuine vitriol and hate.
