Is it too late for Michael Avenatti? I know it's been a while but I recall him beating Trump in 1v1 polling back in the day. MSN commentators seemed to love him and that's important for a candidate. What's stopping him from leading the ticket?

Higher than a lot of people in A&H realize.
This is a base election. It’s all about turning out your party’s most reliable voters and, ideally, gaining some new ones. Part of the reason why Trump ”won” in 2016 (based on the technicality, not the popular vote) was that he was able to turn out a new population of voters, mainly rural white voters, who were cynical about politics but were willing to be registered and vote for him. That was one of the reasons why the polling was so skewed: traditional polling data relies on registered, consistent voters. But the gains made in that rural white vote in 2016 haven’t stuck around. The same thing happened to Obama in 2008: the enthusiasm resulted in a lot of new voters, especially among Black and other minority voters, but they didn’t stick around for midterms. Therefore, the Democratic party lost both the House and Senate in 2010 and Obama’s hands were tied.
So what do we have now? Trump underperformed in the primaries by around 20 to 30 percent, which was the Nikki Haley vote. Some of that vote will return to him, but some of it won’t. Some of it will go to Harris, some of it will go third party (mostly RFK), and some won’t vote at all. There are longtime Republican voters who absolutely refuse to vote for Trump. He is not winning them back, especially now. The majority of normal people saw what went on at the RNC and saw the behavior of a cult. (I make an effort to learn not just from liberals, but from conservatives, and this is what they are saying.)
In a close election, five points or less, this can be the difference between winning a state or not. Look at Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. Now, a lot of people have moved around the country post-covid and this may change some things; there may be some surprises along the way. But part of the reason why the DNC chased Biden off the ticket is because he was costing them votes. The base wasn’t excited and they weren’t getting many new voters, and that means low turnout for the Democratic side. It does NOT mean those voters were moving to Trump, though; it just indicates apathy. Harris gets those voters back because she’s significantly younger, female, Black, and approachable. She’s bigger than Hillary ever was. She might be another Obama, as crazy as that sounds; I have not seen this much energy around a Democratic candidate since 2008.

The GOP is absolutely dead already. Part of what killed it is the generational divide between Boomers, who still revere Reagan, and younger voters, who really only know Trump. A huge indicator of this, IMO, is the pro-union talk going on in MAGA: the GOP has been vehemently against unions since Reagan fired all the striking air-traffic controllers, but a lot of MAGA is actually pro-SOME unions (mainly the male-dominated ones like the police, firefighters, and Teamsters, not the teachers, nurses, or the SEIU, which are female-dominated). Younger MAGA voters scoff at Reaganesque neoconservatism and lean much more populist. But politics isn’t necessarily a straight line between decline and fall; it’s a game of patterns that shift over time and don’t necessarily have a clear beginning or end.
(By the way, I find this thread to be a nicer place to discuss politics than in the Thunderdome, which IMO leans into way too many unfounded rumors, but if this conversation is off-topic, I can stop or move into another thread.)

I wonder how Trump would react if it was decided (via the 25th Amendment) that Biden was now incapable. It would give Kamala Harris some experience in the hot seat and the MAGA reaction would be something else.

I hate when Presidents refer to modern day political figures as the Worst President in history. I know its hyperbole but there are presidents who caused a lot of problems today from a long time again or started wars.

I can answer this. If it's not appropriate for the thread, I understand.
The 25th Amendment can only be invoked by the President's cabinet members. If the President is unable to perform his duties but will not resign, then the cabinet can invoke the 25th and force him out. The only times I've ever heard it bandied about was for Nixon, who developed a serious alcohol problem toward the end of his term, and Trump, who was a moron. It is very hard to do for a reason; it's basically a constitutional coup.
Biden would only resign if he was seriously ill. If he resigned or died, then Kamala Harris would be sworn in as President. After that, it gets a little weird: next in line for the VP slot is Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the House, who is a closet case. Kamala can name her own VP, but he or she would need to be approved by the Congress, and I'm sure the GOP would tie that up just to fuck her over. But Dark Kamala could just accept Johnson as VP for six months, let him and his family move into the Naval Observatory, watch for his little pecker to get hard at the hint of real power, and then just give him the shittiest ceremonial duties possible. Straight out of Veep -- country fairs, barbecues, supermarket ribbon-cuttings, meetings with high school sports teams. He'd be crying to go back to the House in a week.
Democrats are saying (semi-jokingly) that if Joe Biden does have unlimited power to do basically whatever he wants as an official act, for the next six months he should just do ultimate wishlist shit like wiping out all student and medical debt, capping rent, massive raises for military veterans, breaking the filibuster, and expanding the Supreme Court. I honestly can't decide if he would actually do it or not.
