The Raid (2011)

This is hands down one of the best action films to come out of Indonesia, and even more impressive that the director Gareth Evans was originally from Wales and knew/studied the culture of Indonesia in the process.

The film itself is more than just good cop/bad cop trying to take down a drug lord, as the fighting scenes are very well done. If anything, it’s interesting to think that this managed to get a sequel and yet no one talks about it as much as the first one. Except for me, that is. I have no doubt that it is just about as good as the first one.

 
Just watched the first episode of the Apple+ show Dark Matter, which is an adaption of a science fiction novel that was published around ten years ago. I read it (or more specifically listened to the audio book) shortly after it was published and it became a favourite of mine.

The premise is that Jason, an underachieving physics professor who teaches at a local community College, has foregone a more lucrative career in order to raise a family. One night he's kidnapped by an unknown assailant who injects him with a mysterious drug. Shortly thereafter he wakes up in a sterile lab surrounded by people he doesn't recognize who tell him that he's been away on a scientific research mission. I'll leave the rest of the premise in the below spoiler.

it soon becomes clear that an alternative version of Jason, one who decided to dedicate his life to science and his career, made a major breakthrough in quantum physics and discovered a way to travel in between worlds as part of the popular "many worlds" theory. Regretting his decision to never marry his girlfriend and raise a family, he eventually arrived in a reality that the "main" Jason inhabited. He knocks prime Jason out and eventually replaces him. This is the end of the first episode. From here, "prime" Jason decides to find his original reality and to return to his wife and son.

As a fan of the book I was surprised at how well it's adapted so far. It's mostly 1:1, even down to the dialogue, although there are some liberties taken for the sake of a television adaption, although they are very forgivable. The casting is great, Joel Edgerton plays the lead and he really is how I visualized the character. Apparently Blake Crouch, the writer of the novel, is very involved in the production which is awesome. I'm not sure whether this is meant to be a miniseries or an ongoing thing, as the novel has a definitive end and I'm not sure how they could milk multiple seasons from this.

ETA: according to Wikipedia, this is meant to be a nine episode limited series.

I'd recommend, if they keep going how they're going, there's going to be a lot of great stuff here. There's a ton of eerie imagery and very cool segments in the book, and like I said, this is an A+ adaption so far.

I've always been hesitant of shows dealing with alternate realities as they are very rarely written well, I might see what the reviews are like in a couple episodes later.

Oh lol I thought you were being a bit poetic and referring to season 3 of Luther, where he is accused of killing everyone who gets near him and decides to steal diamonds and elope with Alice.

Did Lucifer not know he was the devil in that show? I thought it was based on the vertigo comics?
 
Wendell and wild is an interesting movie that touches on subjects that Hollywood would never admit to.
 
I realize that ever since the Erzer Miller thing I've been avoiding DC and Warner Bros content, but there's a lot of good shit there isn't there? Dead Boy Detectives is great and Mrs Davis looks like it'll be hilarious.
 
Just saw Challengers. i didn’t have many hopes up, because the trailer makes it look like a shitty cringy romcom. Wrong. It was so fucking good, definitely worth going to the cinema for. Even if Zendaya can’t act for shit. Way more thrilling than any action movie to come out recently.

Ok Mrs Davis is hilarious. The core theme is someone forcing social justice where it's not needed and it takes over the world.

The entire premise of the show is one long shitpost from Reddit or 4chan

Finally got around to watching The Devil All The Time. Not sure where the poor reviews came from, it's fantastically acted and it looks gorgeous. Pleasantly surprised by Tom Holland's performance as well, I haven't seen him in anything that wasn't Marvel slop so it was nice to see him actually act. Robert Pattinson was great, but he's great in pretty much everything he's in.
 
I came across a couple movies but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. One is The Gunslinger, which takes place in the saloon of an old western town where the narrator is rude and reveals the embarrassing private lives of the cast - which is distressing to them as they can hear him. Another is Terrifier, where a comic relief clown goes on a very gory murder spree.

Edit: the gunslinger was funny but it's a 8 minute short.

Rewatched Wedlock from 1991 yesterday after more than 20 years and was very entertained

It's a solid B-Movie, not in the Carpenter or Raimi tier but still surprisingly good. Spoilers ahead, it stars the B-Movie Godking Hauer as a diamond thief who gets double crossed by his partners. As the movie is playing "Somewhere in the future" as the title card reads, he gets sent to a prison where there are no bars and no fences, inmates are given an explosive collar that is linked to a, for them unbeknownst, other inmate and it explodes if they are seperated by more than 100 yards.
Hauer's character managed to stash the loot before he got double-crossed and now the prison warden and his ex-partners want to find out where. He eventually breaks out and things happen. It's not a world-moving plot by any means but it is servicable and the movie has a very brisk pacing with nary a wasted minute of screen time. Dialogue is hilarious, lots of adult humour, often aimed at making fun of women, both for plot reasons and because it's a product of its time, i greatly enjoyed this. Has some cool action scenes, too. All in all it held up surprisingly well, i used to watch this film every time it was on late-night tv as a kid. Director also did my favourite Stephen King adaption, "Cat's Eye", also solid 90's B-Movie stuff.

Been saying this ever since i watched it decades ago, it's my favourite De Palma film. Pacino's overacting isn't as pronounced as in other films and where it shines through it fits (toilet scene for example), the supporting cast is stellar as well, Leguizamo and especially Guzman shine in this. Cinematography and direction in general are incredible, too. Pretty much a must-watch. Loved the ending. The film always gives me huge nostalgia because i remember seeing the film posters up on my way to elementary school and thinking "Man, that looks so cool!".

I thought it was alright, a good enough film to watch. Definitely had its moments, i felt only the serial killer couple stuff was out of place but it had a good cast and solid acting all throughout. I didn't know Holland from anything else and liked his role and acting and i agree that Pattinson was fucking great as always, total scene stealer.

Edit: Yesterday, i also watched the Jay & Silent Bob Reboot for whatever godforsaken reason. I should've done the same as with Yoga Hosers and turn it off after ten minutes but i watched it till the end, absolute trashfire of a movie. I already ranted about Smith in another thread but holy shit, every film since Clerks 2 has been unwatchable dogshit. Get off the weed, Kevin, you insufferable prick. And stop sticking your ugly-ass, no-talent daughter in everything, joking about the nepotism doesn't make it any less blatant. Shittiest movie i've watched in recent memory, a comedy film used to have more than two laughs over its runtime in it. Just read Clerks 3 indeed came out and if i am in enough of a self-flagelation mood tonight i'll watch it.

Shit, didn't see this post. Next to Dredd (which is basically the same film) the best modern action film (fuck me, modern? It's 13 years old) i've watched, though i say the second one is even better, a more fleshed out story and even crazier action scenes. The fight choreography in both is just insane, ever since Yuen Woo-Ping directed choreographies in 80's/early 90's kung fu films there hasn't been anything like it. Insanely good movie/s.
