One thing I might do, depending on system style and specific implementation, and bring back the Weeaboo's Post Ratings table, as below. This was something on the profile. You did not receive a score, you instead received a tally of all interactions, given and received.

We already had a tally of interactions received, it gave you a total of each type on the reactions received page, just not in table format. That was until you sperged about people using it to add up their total reaction scores and you scrambled the numbers of each type of reaction.

1. Keep the XenForo/Facebook style, but have categories. Instead of displaying every react possible on one bar, have something similar to Facebook's that acts as the first-level category. You can click 'like' to like, open the fly-out and click a broad reaction, or further fly-out each category and get a very specific / memetic one, like Semper Fi.

Navigating a large thread is very difficult but the easiest way to deal with that is the highlight system. One of the largest projects I have in mind is how I want to handle thread OPs.

It really is a tough problem to handle without turning into a homunculii of Wikipedia and phpbb. I'm not sure what the best way to go about fixing that is, lolcows have never had a focused purpose built social media platform to follow and discuss their antics so this really is some green grass development

I like the post ratings table idea, and the Discord way of displaying reactions. However, I think the current set of reaction stickers is perfect. If someone needs to express an opinion with more nuance than is offered by the current reaction stickers, they should write a post.

The current reactions also reflect the culture of the site; by using them correctly, users signal their understanding of that culture, which builds a sense of community. Allowing 3000+ Unicode reactions destroys that cultural understanding and encourages annoying spam. (Plus the "wall of reacts" thing is hideous.)

Kiwifarms is a community and a community needs common terms of reference. Throw open the gates to infinite reacts and it will still converge on a popular common set with the only difference being a long and confusing adjustment period and a persistent lingering tendency for confusing and seemingly random reactions thereafter. Someone else beat me to it but Discord is a community of communities.

So I am strongly in favour of a modest and constrained shortlist to pick from. Discord also allows you to apply multiple reacts to a comment from a single person. I think that gets messy fast.

What's tricky is the difference between reacting to someone's post and to what they posted about. That's why I will use Lunacy or Horrifying rather than Dislike or Disagree or Dumb. I reserve the latter ones for being what the poster has said than what they've covered. I think a lot of people do the same.

It helps - if you go the route of reactions having a positive or negative score - to use that to help convey that split at a forum level. Like having "Horrifying" not be a negative score but "Dislike" is.

Sorry - TL;DR: To me it's all about whatever promotes shared understanding of what reactions mean. That's what fosters a community.

I think option 1 is the best of the two. Discord you can end up with so many emoticons that its longer then the post itself and a lot of their emoticons require you to either know the manual thing to type or search through every servers to find it. They way they are now though seems like a good amount of choices

All the custom reacts might kill site performance with how many users there are, how many unique reacts each user gets, and how many possibilities there are for unique reactions. Not to mention socking to get new custom stickers that won't fit in your old allotted amount, meaning people would strain the server for it. Either that or I'm retarded and there's no extra strain from them.

The basic idea of a reaction is that it lets someone add their opinion to your post.

With this, I'd like to propose "stamping".
You see a cringe post. CRINGE! you need to let the world know about how cringe this post is.
So you give it a cringe stamp. What is a cringe stamp? A stamp, in database is a type that is 20 bytes long, and contains the following info
User tag- 4 bytes
Post tag - 4 bytes
X,Y coordinates- 2x 4-byte ints.
rotation- 2-byte int
type- 2-bytes

But that's all nerd shit. what's a stamp?
A stamp is a physical instance of an image on a post.
So, when you click the 'cringe' stamp, you get to put a physical, permanent mark on someone else's post which cannot be removed. The original poster must sit there and sneed as his post has been VANDALIZED by you. The stamp goes behind the text as to make sure it's still readable.
And in this way, the basic idea of a reaction is fulfilled. Using a small, minimally-customizable 'stamp' the entire world can see whether something is 'based' or 'cringe', or whatever else you would like to express about a post.

I guess yes you did need to clarify, That was actually my first and primary concern. That said, I'm going to not focus on that at all with feedback going forward.

With that out of the way though, I'm actually not completely opposed to idea 2 anymore. Custom stickers could be fun, imagine the possibilities, imagine the smell of the death fat stickers.

The facebook option isn't too bad. Given that stickers used to/still have(to believers) a numeric score, perhaps a positive/negative bar to represent how users feel about the post(Where mousing over/clicking on the bar would give you a sticker-based breakdown of the score) would be good.

coincidentally the threadmarks and reader mode is basically what you want for highlights.

I think copying discord and adding community specific options is probably the best idea.

I think it would accomplish everything that you seem to want to accomplish with the system, with the added bonus that "reaction points" would be replaced by a multitude of reactions. No more retarded "reddit updoots" whining. The reaction system would simply serve it's function: to provide reactions to posts when you have nothing better to say while allowing users more freedom of how to react. I also imagine that it would allow for more board-specific reaction options and stuff, which would be pretty interesting.

If I had to change anything from discord to work better with a forum environment, I'd maybe only let posters pick one reaction per post, rather than multiple like discord allows.

I know a lot of people don't like Discord and that's reasonable lol. But it's reaction system seems the best...

Another idea on the reaction score portion of it. Maybe have it be negative/neutral/positive having neutral be a 500 point or so spread into negative/positive. That way the fear of someone just dictating off the positive/negative how they will react to someone has a bit of a buffer.

this changes my vote to be less "every unicode emoji ever" because half the fun of the discord reacts was spelling 🅿🅴🅽🅸🆂 using those weird flag characters, like the one where someone posted the toronto tower in LGBT colors and all the reactions were various unicode planes ✈ 🛩

I think the most important thing the reaction system does (beyond the highlights, which are fucking amazing; maybe someday the googlefaggots who aren't logged in will ONLY get to see highlights for some threads or something) is that it lets you say "wow that's a faggot" without having to shit up the board with "wow what a faggot" replies.
