Hello. I have a sci-fi novel with horror elements, and I am now in the stage where I am supposed to find a developmental editor. Not a line editor, specifically I need a developmental one. However, my book has anti-socialist characters...and I would like to find a developmental editor who is either centrist, a conservative, or a liberal who opposes socialism. Do you know anyone I could hire?

Why would you care about your editor's political views? If he's any good, he'll critique it on its merits and help you develop it on its themes. Most writers/editors of fiction can be open-minded in contrast to the news editing hacks.

I'm not an editor not have any experience but hire me, pay me, I'll do my best.

First off - who said that? Kinda important.

If it's an agent or publisher, go with who they suggest. Anything else would be foolish, wokeshit be damned.

If it's advice from a writing course or something, then use who you like. Personally for writing done on spec I give it to one of three trusted people first who send it back after a few weeks with a mass of annotations (usually about twice the word count of the actual book - they're all verbose fuckers) of what needs expanding, what doesn't work, and what is unclear.
If you insist on a pro, which certainly doesn't hurt as long as you don't mind shelling out for them, start trawling for ones who have experience in your genre. That's the vital thing - nothing else matters. you need someone who can not only develop your work but kick you in the ass for every lazy trope you use (and there'll be fucking dozens, I guarantee it.)

An editor worth his salt should be quite rare considering the sad state of modern media in general, producers arent short of editor labour yet you still have a lot of tawdry work that could be trimmed or improved.

Throwaway account to preserve some anonymity.

I know a guy. 25 years in the business, and fair rates. Mention me, and he'll give you a discount. Email me at kiwidevelopmenteditor@gmail.com for the hookup so I don't have to put his info on this resume-cancer site.
Thank you Shane but I'm not afraid to speak here.

Well look no further, friend. I might have worked for the Toronto Star but I've moved to Mexico and no longer have to fear having my right to free expression suppressed by the Trudeau regime.
Normally I charge $75/hr but I'd be happy to help any of the fine people here for half my usual rate since it's getting harder to find someone deplatforming proof to fulfill professional services.
I might stick around and post here a bit as I've grown more curious about this community since #DropKiwiFarms first crossed my Twitter feed. But there are multiple ways for you to reach out.

A good AI tool can help in the meantime. Of course, you'll have to make your own evaluations the whole way through. I find it's been tremendously helpful.

The Giver has been written already.
TRUE. it did have kind of a shitty ending though, didnt it?

Also a human editor is probably best but there are browser ai editors like hemingway or grammarly that count your adverbs, use of passive voice, etc. I haven't used them so i can't say if they suck or not but they exist.

I hope you're self-publishing because, if you're not, I would cut contact with the "publisher" you're working with and run. A traditional publisher (even an indie one) will never require you to hire an editor of any sorts out-of-pocket. That's literally their job. Any "publisher" who requires you to contribute out-of-pocket costs is a vanity press at best, and a full-on scammer at worst.

I'm very anti-commie and I love sci-fi horror, so I'd be willing to take a look at it for free.

I remember the book sucking. But it is an intro to the dystopian novels, so it has its purpose from a pedagogical standpoint.
Oh for sure. I had to read it in middle school or something and I thought it was alrightish until the end. It does make for an ok introductory book though, you’re right.

One of the best dystopian novels I recommend is Evgeni Zamiatin’s “Us”. Orwell used it as inspiration for 1984. It’s really good.
