What is it with Phil and junkies? Nearly everyone he knows in RL (which is admittedly a very small pool) comes from junkies or allegedly is a junkie themselves. But while they're all the typical drug junkies Phil is uniquely a jpeg junkie.

This tells me he despises her. She was hogging attention and being a victim while poor little Phil was in his formative ages. Unforgiveable sin for Phil. Not surprised he doesn't talk about her. It's clear to me he hates her guts. Also she's a female.

The fact he doesn't talk about her more makes me think it was something of a nothingburger situation that probably didn't change much. We know Phil is someone who holds a grudge, and if he's willing to rant about the Wolverine story, I'm sure he'd rant about something with Melissa if there was anything to it.

I agree Phil would be upset at anyone taking attention away from him, but given how spoiled he was, I suspect Melissa existing didn't change much with Momma Burnell spoiling Phil. If anything, she might have doubled down on giving Phil attention because someone new was in the house. Because I can't think of a more relevant example, it might have been like a less extreme version of Harry Potter, where Phil is the fat child that gets all the praise and attention and Melissa was the one they just sorta let exist. Not to say they were entirely heartless towards her or anything, but given how spoiled Phil turned out, I don't think she was taking away that much attention from him.

I'd argue that he's an alcohol junkie more than gatcha, he's been drinking half his life, gatcha is a much more recent development than alcohol. I think it's mostly projection on his part, everyone he doesn't like is some form of something he doesn't like about himself... addiction>junkie; successful>tryhard; not to mention his seething about people that have actual happy families with human children.

He acts like all of Seattle is 3rd and Pine, near that MethDonalds IYKYK and Aurora Ave. For the people that don't know, 3rd and Pine in Seattle has always been always kinda sketchy, hell Pine street in general. It used to be Sodo, but gentrification changed that and they migrated back to Pine. Aurora Ave in Seattle is pretty much is otherwise known as "Hookers Row" where you'll find the Jenna's of the world doing everything they can to make rent or to pay their pimp their cut....Aurora has been sketchy going back to the 60's and 70's. Hell, he thinks that if he steps outside of his mature adult condo, a shootout like what happened in Tacoma on Ash Street between the Rangers and the Crips might break out.

Not all of Seattle is like that, honestly. Capitol Hill has tons of local shops and eats, but its hella hipster. Since Phil and Leanna used to make fun of the hipsters when they first moved there, he can't go there because too many memories of the last person that gave a fuck about his stupid ass. Also, when the weather is actually nice - which is RARE - the Waterfront is a cool spot to hang out. Since Phil isn't into "beach culture", he won't go and see for himself.

If Phil was to drive further north, hop on the 405 to cities like Redmond, Mountlake Terrance, or even Kirkland, it looks NOTHING like Seattle. However, that would require leaving Renton and you never know when his back might start to give him pain.

Very rare to ever hear Phil talk about Melissa. Do we know roughly how many years she was living with Phil?
For those of you that didn't watch the clip, Phil mentions that she was 5 years older than him, and in the story he tells, she was in the 8th grade while he was in the 3rd grade. Did she live with Phil until she graduated from high school (assuming she did graduate)?
