Unpopular Opinions about Video Games

Deathstroke in Arkham Origins is the best boss fight in the Arkham Series. He was an improvement of Ra's Al Ghul's boss fight, and he was the real deal that tested Batman in combat.

Which meant that it was all downhill from there. The Arkham Knight had such a cool design and backstory, but the boss fight is so lackluster it's fucking hilarious.

It should've been more along the lines of Joel dying to save Abby. If I wrote it, it would be that Abby was close to getting killed, and Joel saves her life in exchange for his. Then Ellie would be pissed at Abby for getting Joel killed, but she has to learn to get over that, and that getting pissed off at Abby is not what Joel would've wanted.
Ellie should've killed her. The idea that she murdered all those people and lost her fingers to let her go at the end and I'm supposed to see that as a redeeming moment is absurd. You have to accept a lot of contrivance for the plot to where its going. That's easy to ignore if you realize that the point of the plot is to set up the journey toward revenge and see Ellie fall to low point after low point driven purely by her rage and self-hatred for now never being able to mend her relationship with Joel. I can accept that those goals are what actually matter to the plot but letting Abby go just doesn't sit right after everything she goes through.

As for my minor gripes I hate how she leaves Joel's guitar out to the elements so it'll rot just all for the purpose of having it be in frame for the final shot. A real person in her shoes would have respect for it and put it back in its case.

Also since I'm always gameplay first the swapping between characters had bad impact on all combat since resources and upgrades just swap back and forth every 20 minutes and you only get a half game with each.

The Deathstroke game made Arkham Origins, I don't find it bad like other people, just not as memorable, outside of two parts. The cutscene where Bruce damn near dies and he's going back out an Alfred gives him the "You're an angry man with a trust fund and too much time on your hands" speech, and the Deathstroke fight. Anything else in the game, I honestly can't remember.

Ellie should've killed her and had the "It doesn't make you feel any better does it" moment.

My biggest beef with Last of Us 2, is how a majority of it hinges on Owen making dumb fucking decisions and everyone just going along with it. Okay, you find out where your girlfriend's father's murderer is, you drive well over 500 miles, over the rocky mountains, in the dead of winter to find him, while a zombie apocalypse is going on and other humans are more likely to rob, murder, and maybe even eat you before help you; okay, you're committed to your mission, I guess. You find him, kill him in front of his brother (who introduces himself as much) and who is essentially his daughter. One guy decides no witnesses, which is the smart thing to do when you go all that way for a fucking blood feud, but Owen decides "No, we can't kill them, that'd be wrong" as his girlfriend is wiping Joel's brain matter off her hands. And it just gets dumber and dumber from there; and no one bothers to tell him he's a dumb fucking idiot and needs to shut the fuck up.

I've said it before, the Deathstroke fight isn't even close to as amazing as Redditors like to wet their pants over. The whole thing is a bunch of glorified QTEs and you can cheese your way through it by using the Batclaw.

The lack of good villain fights really was a problem for Knight. The fight with the Arkham Knight toward the end isn't bad, but it's about the only memorable one, which is a real shame, considering how polished the game's main gameplay elements had become in Knight.

Alfred is by far the best part of Origins. For all its faults, the story of Origins does do a great job of justifying events in the main trilogy, like Batman's obsession with protecting Wayne Manor, and Alfred's insistence in Arkham City that Bruce save the city instead of going after Talia first.

That and the Electrocutioner fight. I mean, it was as brutal and satisfying as the final Mysterio fight in Spider-Man 2 back in the day.

With all due respect, that's basically 99 percent of Arkham combat in a nutshell. QTE counters and single-button attacks, with some special moves on the side. The Deathstroke fight leaned heavily on that, and you can always make it more challenging by not using the Batclaw. I sure as hell didn't use the Batclaw in my first fight with him.

That's the problem. You'd think Jason Todd would've put up a better fight as the Arkham Knight. He should've been an improvement of the Deathstroke boss battle in Origins, just as how Deathstroke was an improvement of the Ra's Al Ghul boss fight from Arkham City. Instead, tank battle and predator. Which just feels dated.

Also, his militia feels dated, too. Bane already had a militia, Strange had his Tyger forces, all the militia in Knight does is have some improvements, but the story and reason for them fighting is just weak. Especially since you do catch the Knight, so why they keep fighting just makes no sense. At this point, they're traitors to Uncle Sam and would just get a bullet hose while they're in jail. They're not criminals, but an invading army. At least Bane's men were in Gotham when the cops were corrupt and looking the other way, and Strange's Tyger forces had legal authority thanks to the mayor.

To me, it's Deathstroke, Bane, and the rest of the bosses. That's what made Origins memorable. You'd think Knight would build up on that and bring more memorable bad guys from the comics and shows, but no. It's Scarecrow all over again, even though he already dominated Arkham Asylum.

The game-makers want you to forgive Abby, but it's hilarious since Abby doesn't forgive Joel for the death of her loved one. It's basically the standard leftist plot of them making one side more righteous than the other, to the point where both sides are guilty of the same crime, but one is less guilty.

Everyone but me has a bad definition of what makes a game "obscure" or a "hidden gem".

Over the years, I've seen jargon change and reluctantly accepted it, and I get that mileage may vary on what is and isn't obscure. But this trend of "obscure" and "hidden gem" being applied to popular games just because they aren't minecraft or fortnite popular is annoying to me.

I saw some YouTube thumbnails today saying that Elite Dangerous and Wreckfest were obscure, hidden gems. These games have tens of thousands of reviews and thousands of players even years after release.

Heh, I bet you didn't know about the secret Mario Bros game that was originally called Doki Doki Panic :smug:

Young people of every generation are absolute convinced they invented liking things. I don't know if you guys have heard of this little-known band from the 1970s called Led Zeppelin, but they're pretty good.

I dont think Abby's necessarily wrong from her perspective, I just think Ellie would have killed her and I don't think Joel would have said she did something wrong. If we ignore an exact body count for ~ludo-narrative dissonance~ reasons, Joel and Ellie are still killers, maybe they don't canonically kill hundeads of people but they are killling anyone who gets in their way regardless. Why would she stop at Abby? It just doesn't make any sense.

The other big failure is how unlikable Abby's crew is which stacks the deck against them especially since they're introduced after we already like the main characters.

Ellie was horrified and vomits repeatedly when she realizes she killed a pregnant women in TLOU2.

Abby literally gets more excited at the prospect of slitting Dina's throat when she realizes she's pregnant and only relents when Lev begs her not to.

The two characters are worlds apart morally. The "le both sides are evil lol" thing Cuckman was trying to do was retarded.

I even remember an interview he did where he said Joel and fucking David were the same, he's nuts.

Although I guess in fairness he is an Israeli and they're pretty big into the whole "it's morally righteous to drop cluster bombs on kindergarten classes because their might be terrorists hiding in the juice boxes" thing.

They don't really have the same morals as normal people.

The underlying murder mystery of Disco Elysium is so badly done that it really hurts the game. The writers seem to have not even bothered trying to make it work on that level.

The show True Detective or the book Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency first function as decent murder mysteries and then added the character drama or philosophy or humor or supernatural elements on top of that. Disco Elysium has the fluff without the foundation.

Having read a lot of mysteries, I'd say that Disco Elysium's basic mystery is okay. A C+/B- effort. I've seen the basic premise of 'a straightforward impulse murder that seems more sinister and complex just because everyone has dragged their own mess into it' performed better to be sure. But I've seen it done worse as well. Personally I'd say it's more of a B- because I enjoyed all the flourishes that go with it but it still follows a pretty solid framework of 'a man and woman are fucking when the man is killed, except it's not just any man, he's a political hatchetman, and it's not just any woman, she's a woman with a secret.'

The problem is that
the killer is just some guy you don't encounter until the very, very end, his motivations more or less boil down to "he's crazy", and the game prevents you from even trying to look for clues by simply locking off access to that part of the map until the finale.

Disco Elysium pulls all the vital plot elements out of its ass at the eleventh hour. That breaks every rule of not just good mystery writing, but good fiction generally.

I think the criticism of the killer's identity and the resolution is fair, but for me what makes DE so compelling is the general character writing. The way all of Harry's inner thoughts influence your path through the story is very well done.

The facial tech in L.A. Noire is impressive but the performance is so off it's hard to tell what facial clues you're supposed to be looking for.
This is one of the rare times where I'll say the lack of graphical fidelity hurt the game. With how low resolution the textures are, and the fact that the models don't have half the detail they need to properly convey the facial expressions the actors made...instead of looking good, honestly, it looks uncanny and goofy.

Had Suicide Squad: kill the Justice League not been an always online live service game or had cringe dialogue or associated with Sweet Baby Inc. I think I would have defended the game. It was a game that was safe edgy that became unintentionally actually edgy following Kevin Conroy's death and the internet's reaction to it. I like Captain Boomerang and King Shark There were moment in the game were it was both unintentionally and even intentionally funny.

I could never get the interrogations in LA Noire to “click” for me. I guess you’re supposed to look for tells in their behavior and expressions and whatnot, but between the uncanny valley of real faces being projected onto 3D models and the uncertainty surrounding the meta-acting of the people playing the characters(did the character make that face because the character is lying, or did the actor playing the character make that face because the actor isn’t actually the character and acting is just lying while wearing a costume) I could never tell if I was playing the game right or not.
