i have a lot of nostalgia for the old ones, there was a charm to the simplicity of just a game titlescreen with a number signifying each part. Always hated the shift to the soyface thumbnail that occurred, it was infantilizing and im not really sure how else someone could take it.
It's because literal children are more attracted to videos with thumbnails like that because all of their favorite groomers use them for their Minecraft videos. Also, something about have a face makes it more relatable, but I don't believe that for a second.
You can pretty accurately track the falloff in quality based on the thumbnails alone.
