From my experience observing some, the right-winger NAFOids of Europe are inevitably right-liberals who support Ukraine because they see it as the latest group of people desiring to join the west for the sake of Democracy*, Freedom* and Capitalism*. Think of a Gunther Fehlinger type who thinks that the real crime that Russia did was oppose the Rules-Based World Order.

I love how my sentiment from the OP still rings true. There are slightly over a million Ukrainians serving in the army, some civily, some stricly in combat capacity. There are many many brigades to choose from (and things like the Red Cross besides), but they always choose Azov. This is not a statement about Nazism, btw, but it is reflective of the NAFO train of thought. Is it because Russia said they’re bad meaning they are good? Or is it just that NAFO only sees them on the news and can’t google other brigades?
IMO, Azov gets chosen simply because they market themselves the best. The typical defense for sending money for them is to just find some random picture of a Russian POW with edgy tattoos and proclaim "LOOK, THE RUSSIANS ARE THE REAL NAZIS HERE!" in an attempt to also deflect the whole "De-Nazification" narrative that Vlad's got going on. Of course, this only works on people who haven't read a book in 20 years and get their historical facts from Hollywood movies.

I think it has to do with the "Spartan heroism" they displayed at Azovstal and how that became its own memetic story. To be fair, it is a propaganda war for the most donations. Uncle Sam ain't there to buy you wet wipes in Ukraine. And people tend to donate to the most famous units/heroic/meme units. I did also see a lot of people donating also to the 93rd Mechanized because they are one of the most famous for example.
