I like TAS. Also Strange New Worlds brought back the life support belt (or an thing like it) for one episode where Una and La’an were doing that Enterprise challenge thing.

Farscape had a version of the life support belts. They called them shield belts I believe. They protected your entire body from laser projectiles and at one point Crichton dives into a pool of lava with the belt.

You could do a similar thing with force fields I bet. It's a shame none of the nutrek hacks are interested in making cool sci-fi gizmos and gadgets.

It's because they don't understand science-fiction and the evolution of technology in Star Trek.
Remember the fucking solar panels on the road of the Golden Gate Bridge (STD, Picard), or the 3D printers looking exactly like [current year] 3D printers?

I always interpreted the stripped down screens and panels with like 2-4 buttons from TOS-ENT to be an indication of super advanced technology that’s way beyond our frame of reference with current technology. Like the doctors just holding up a tricorder to your neck for a second and reading off the exact crazy alien disease you have, and using that device that shoots atomized medicine into your blood without a needle puncture. I’ve always found the retro look to work really well in that regard- we’ve moved past jeans and collars to the superiority of a color coded, gut-hiding, shoulder-broadening black silhouetted jumpsuit. Leaving Riker free to be a space sex pest well past his fattening.

Since nuTrek is written and run by non-fans, they’re obsessed with updating the look to ugly distracting holograms like 2008’s Iron Man. SO FUTURISTIC!

Similarly, the space battles in the Berman era were always slow and not very bombastic. Fire a warning shot across their port nacelle! They’ve hit, shields holding at 40%. Retreat, warp 5!

Now it’s an Independence Day show of PEWPEWPEWPEW. Visual vomit. Usually less is more.

That actually already exists. It's called a jet injector.

A study was done in 2017 regarding the use of lasers in jet injections. Nutrek writers could probably take advantage of that study to explain hyposprays in some episode. Would be cool world-building (they only care about stuff going boom boom tho).

It's not only corny but completely impractical. The whole appeal of science fiction for me is seeing outlandish ideas that you can wrap your brain around. Maybe it's somewhat based in real science and partly based on imagination. It's fun to think about. The problem is that the writers don't want you to think, they want you to feel. You'll cry butterfly tears when you see bland character #16 die!

Same argument applies here. The battles in Star Trek are fun because you can easily understand what's happening. It's actually more intense when they only show you shots of the bridge blowing up with the occasional shot of the starship being fired at. You can only comprehend the Nutrek marvel tier battles on the superficial level of "they're fighting."

Either that or they don't want to be seen as ripping off Dune.

Anyway I think I prefer spacesuits, even if it is for dramatic license. Besides, don't you think there might be entirely practical reasons to have full body spacesuits over forcefields? Imagine if the power suddenly fails. Which one would you rather be wearing?

NuTrek's writers are more nepotistic and less talent. They want people to know who they are. Also, considering both are from Paramount, that same hologram was also used in Transformers Age of Extinction, and it goes to show how lazy Paramount has truly been.

I'd wear of course the fucking force field belt. You wanna navigate the area of the ship where life support failed with a 400lbs space suit? Artificial gravity is still functioning in that section so good luck moving your leg.

What if there's an alien invader that can survive without oxygen in that section? How are you going to fight them with a space suit? This exact scenario happened in Star Trek Voyager when Species 8472 got on the ship.

I mean if forcefields are good enough for prison cells they ought to be fine for spacewalks. Those cell doors hardly ever fail all that often, usually.
